Using CBD Oil for Pain Management – Does It Work?

Overview

CBD (Cannabidiol) is a form of cannabinoid. It’s a chemical that is naturally found in cannabis (marijuana, hemp). CBD does not cause the high often associated with cannabis. This is due to tetrahydrocannabinol, which is a different kind of cannabinoid.

To manage chronic pain , some people use CBD oil and other CBD products. CBD oil can reduce:

  • Pain
  • inflammation
  • Overall discomfort due to a range of health conditions

Research on CBD products for pain management is promising.

CBD oil can provide a solution for those suffering from chronic pain. More research is required to confirm the pain-relieving effects of CBD oil and other products. Epidiolex is a drug that’s prescribed for epilepsy and it’s the only CBD product approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

Non-prescription, FDA-approved CBD products are not available. They don’t have the same regulations as other drugs in terms of purity and dosage. Continue reading to find out more about CBD’s potential benefits for pain. Talk to your doctor to determine if CBD is an option.

CBD for Chronic Pain Relief

Everybody has the cell-signaling system, also known as the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) .

Researchers believe that CBD interacts with the ECS’s core component, the endocannabinoid-receptors found in your brain and immune systems.

Your cells have tiny receptor proteins that attach to them. Receptors are tiny proteins that attach to your cells and receive signals from various stimuli.

This causes pain relief and anti-inflammatory effects. CBD oil and other products can be beneficial to people suffering from chronic pain such as chronic back pain.

One 2018 review evaluated the effectiveness of CBD in relieving chronic pain. This review examined studies that were conducted between 1975-March 2018. These studies included:

  • Cancer pain
  • Neuropathic pain
  • fibromyalgia

These studies led researchers to conclude that CBD is effective in pain management and doesn’t have any side effects.

CBD for arthritis pain management

A 2016 study examined CBD use in rats suffering from arthritis.

For four consecutive days, researchers applied CBD gel to rats. The rats were given either 0.6, 3.0, 6.2, 62.3, or 62.3 mg of CBD per day. Researchers found that the affected joints of the rats were less inflammatory and more painless. There were no side effects.

Low doses of 0.6 mg or 3.1 mg did not improve the pain scores in rats. Researchers found that rats who received 6.2 mg per day were able to experience reduced pain and swelling.

Rats who were given 62.3 mg/day experienced similar results to those who received 6.2 mg/day. They didn’t feel any less pain despite receiving a significantly higher dose.

CBD gel’s anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving properties could be beneficial to people suffering from arthritis. More human trials are required.

CBD for Cancer Treatment Relief

People with colorectal cancer may also use CBD. Studies have shown that CBD can shrink cancerous tumors. Most studies on humans have focused on CBD’s role in pain management and treatment for cancer.

The National Cancer Institute suggested CBD as an option to reduce side effects.

  • Pain
  • vomiting
  • Lack of appetite

Study subjects were given oral sprays containing a mixture of THC and CBD extracts in a 2010 study. THC-CBD was combined with opioids. The extract was more effective than the opioids in pain relief, according to this study.

Similar results were found in a 2013 study about THC and oral THC-CBD sprays. This study was also conducted by many researchers who participated in the 2010 study. We still need more evidence.

CBD for migraine pain Relief

There are very few studies on CBD and migraine. The studies currently available only consider CBD when it is used in combination with THC.

A 2017 study has shown that CBD and THC may lead to less severe and acute pain in people suffering from migraine.

Some participants used a combination of two substances in this study. The first compound contained 9 percent CBD, and very little THC. The other contained 19% THC. Orally, the doses were taken.

Phase I showed no pain relief when the dose was less than 100 mg. Acute pain decreased by 55 percent when the doses were increased from 100 mg to 200 mg.

Participants who were given a combination of CBD and THC compound saw their migraine attacks decrease by 40.4 percent in phase II. The daily dose was 200mg.

Combining compounds had slightly higher effectiveness than 25mg of amitriptyline (a tricyclic depressant). Study participants experienced a 40.1 percent reduction in migraine attacks with amitriptyline.

Participants suffering from cluster headaches also experienced pain relief using the combination of CBD compounds and THC compounds. However, this was only true if they had suffered from migraine in their childhood.

CBD side effects

CBD is not thought to pose any significant health risks. Most CBD products aren’t even in the bloodstream.

However, side effects can be possible, such as:

  • Fatigue
  • diarrhea
  • Changes in appetite
  • Weight changes

and CBD could interact:

  • Certain over-the-counter drugs (OTC)
  • Prescription medications
  • Dietary supplements

Be cautious if your supplements or medications contain a ” Grapefruit Warning”

CBD, like other drugs and supplements can also increase the risk of liver toxicities.

One study of mice found that CBD-rich cannabis extract raised their risk for liver toxicity. Some mice were force-fed large amounts of CBD-rich cannabis extract.

Takeaway

Although there isn’t any conclusive evidence to support CBD or CBD oils as the best method for pain management, researchers agree these products have great potential.

CBD products may be able to offer relief for people suffering from chronic pain. Talk to your doctor if you are interested in CBD for chronic pain. Your doctor can help you decide the right starting dose.
