Botulism: Overview

Botulism (or botulism poisoning) is a rare but very serious illness caused by a nerve toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. There are three main types of botulism: infant botulism, foodborne botulism, and wound botulism. According to the National Botulism Surveillance Summary (2017), 182 laboratory-confirmed botulism cases were reported to CDC in 2017. The toxin may enter the body depending on the type of exposure. It can transmit through food, contact with contaminated soil, or through an open wound. Botulism is diagnosed based on the clinical history and clinical examination followed by laboratory confirmation. A delay in treatment can lead to paralysis, breathing difficulties, and even death.

Botulism Market

The current treatment of Botulism includes Antitoxin which is administered as soon as possible after a clinical diagnosis. Early diagnosis and treatment are effective in reducing mortality rates. Severe botulism cases require supportive treatment, especially mechanical ventilation, which may be required for weeks or even months. In the case of wound botulism, the treatment approach includes antitoxin administration, hospital admission, close monitoring, respiratory support.

The vaccine is available in the market but has some negative side effects. To overcome the existing unmet need and to provide effective therapeutics options, several companies are working to develop new therapies based on different MoA to treat Botulism. Currently, the Botulism therapeutics market is limited and consists of early Phase assets.
