Animal shelter benefactor Brent Kloecker says that adopting or fostering pets during the pandemic does a lot more than save the lives of deserving animals.

Georgetown, TX / The COVID-19 pandemic has left a lot of people feeling lonely and isolated. Social distancing is difficult, and for people who live alone, the endeavor is incredibly taxing. According to the JAMA Network, an information-sourced website maintained by the American Medical Association, the prevalence of depression is triple what it was before the pandemic.

One of the reasons for the increase in the number of people experiencing symptoms of depression has a lot to do with isolation. “Not everyone who is home sheltering in place has the kind of job that allows them to work from home. Those are the people who are sitting at home watching the news or watching movies and thinking about when they will be able to return to life as they knew it.”, Brent Kloecker said.

There has been an increase in the number of pet adoptions nationwide during the pandemic. Animal rights advocate Brent Kloecker says that he is excited about what he is seeing. “I think it’s great that there are so many people out there who have chosen to open their hearts and homes to animals who want nothing more than to be loved.”, Brent Kloecker said.

“Most people who choose to adopt or foster a pet do so intending to help an animal. What they later come to realize is that their animals help them in many ways. I have even had people tell me that their pets saved their lives.’, Brent Kloecker said.

Brent Kloecker says that pet companionship enriches people’s lives and can improve their health. According to a scientific statement issued by the American Heart Association, owning a pet can reduce the risk factors associated with heart disease. “Dogs, in particular, are great companions for people who want to improve or maintain their health. Masking up, and taking dogs out for walks, gets them out of the house, and allows them to get the exercise they need.”, Brent Kloecker said.

“I highly recommend pet fostering or pet adoption for anyone who is feeling a bit lonely. I do, however, advise people to make sure they have the means to take care of a pet adequately and will commit to the process.”, Brent Kloecker said.
