The Keto Diet Is Gaining Popularity, But Is Keto Diet Safe?

In some areas of the United States, extreme weight loss is taking a new turn. It’s known as the “keto diet.” The diet promoters claim it works by utilizing the body’s fat-burning system to help people lose weight in as little time as 10 days. It is also known to reduce the symptoms of epilepsy in children, though experts aren’t sure why.

The diet is said to be quick and effective in losing weight, as well as providing more energy. Critics say that the diet can lead to weight loss and even death.

What is ketosis?

A keto diet is a diet with very few or no carbohydrate that causes the body to enter ketosis. When people eat low- or no carb diets, ketosis is when molecules called ketones buildup in their bloodstream. Low carbohydrate intake causes blood sugar levels to fall and causes the body to begin breaking down fat for energy. Ketosis can be described as a mild version of ketoacidosis. Ketoacidosis is most common in people with type 1 diabetes. It is actually the leading cause for death in people with diabetes under 24 years old.

Many experts agree that ketosis is not necessarily harmful. There have been some studies that suggest that a ketogenic diet can be safe for people who are significantly overweight or obese. Other clinical reviews show that low-carbohydrate patients can regain some of the weight they have lost within one year.

Where it’s useful

Dr. Gianfranco Kappello, an associate professor in surgery at Sapienza University, Rome, Italy, created the keto diet.

He has been praised by thousands of users for his great success. His study showed that more than 19,000 people lost weight quickly and had few side effects. Most of them kept it off for at least a year.

The keto diet resulted in patients losing an average of 10.2 kg, or 22 pounds, over 2.5 cycles. Cappello concluded that the keto diet is a great way to lose weight for obese and overweight people. The few side effects such as fatigue are manageable.

Bette Klein is a registered dietitian at Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital and has been using the keto diet for years in order to ease epilepsy symptoms in children. Healthline was told by her that it’s especially effective for children with refractory epilepsy, who haven’t responded to at least two drug treatments.

Klein stated that about half of the children who follow the diet experience a decrease in their seizures. However, the dietitian stated that doctors aren’t sure why this diet works in these instances. She stated that “there is no clear definition of what’s happening.”

Rudy Mawer is a sports nutritionist who has had some success using the keto diet. He stated that he uses low-carb diets with people who are having trouble losing weight. The plan is also used by high-performing athletes. Mawer explained to Healthline that there are many benefits to the program.

Its quick results are one of its benefits. It is possible to lose weight quickly, which can help encourage people.

He said, “You can be motivated by this weight-loss.”

The keto diet is easy to follow, he said. It eliminates one food group, making it simpler for people to follow.

The diet makes people feel full, even though it has fewer calories, and gives them more energy. He explained that people are giving up the unhealthy diet of processed foods. The keto diet stabilizes blood sugar, which results in a steady flow of energy. Mawer points out that there are some drawbacks.

He stated that the diet did not necessarily increase athletic performance. This may be a problem for some athletes. He said that people must adhere to the program in order for it to work. Mawer said, “It’s a very strict diet.” “You must do everything right.”

He notes that every person is unique and will react to a different program.

He said, “What is great for one person may be terrible for another.”

When it is unhealthy

Critics claim that keto-type diets are often unhealthy and only work in the short term.

First, the majority of lost weight is water, says Lisa Cimperman R.D.N., a clinical nutritionist at University Hospitals Case Medical Center, Cleveland, Ohio and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

“Once your body enters Ketosis, you begin to lose muscle and become very fatigued. Eventually, you will go into starvation mode.” It becomes harder to lose weight then,” Cimperman explained to Healthline.

Mawer stated that he does not believe the keto diet causes muscular loss. However, he cautioned that it is not ideal for anyone trying to gain muscle.

Healthline also interviewed other experts who had more cautionary words.

Healthline reports that keto diets should be administered under medical supervision and for short periods of time. Francine Blinten R.D. is a certified clinical nutritionist in Old Greenwich, Connecticut. They have been successful in treating some epilepsy patients with chemotherapy and shrinking tumors.

Blinten stated that a ketogenic diet should be used only in extreme cases.

It can cause more harm than good. She explained that it can also damage the heart muscle, which is also a part of the body.

Cimperman said that anyone with type 2 diabetes could benefit from weight loss and a low-carb diet as it will increase insulin sensitivity.

She said that there are other options than a fad diet, which won’t help long-term weight loss.

Blinten has tried a ketogenic diet in some cases for cancer patients. However, it can cause more harm than good, especially for patients with underlying liver or kidney problems.

She said that people are using it for cosmetic purposes, but it’s too extreme to be safe.

The feeding tube approach

Some people have gone one step further with the keto diet, inserting a feeding tube through their nose into their esophagus.

The diet adheres to a strict 800-calorie, high-protein, low-carb diet. This is done through a tube with a slow-drip pump mechanism. The liquid diet includes only black coffee, tea, and water.

Oliver Di Pietro from Florida has offered the tube diet to anyone who is able to pay $1,500. A 2012 local newspaper reports that Di Pietro discovered the diet while traveling to Italy. The keto diet is safe, effective and suitable for anyone who wants to lose a few extra pounds.

Cimperman said, “This is a ridiculous way to lose weight.”

Cimperman stated that a diet of 800 calories per day is “essentially starving yourself.” “Of course, you’ll lose weight.”

Any diet below 1,200 calories per day is considered starvation and not recommended for long-term weight loss.

She explained that tube feeding is an acceptable tool in a hospital setting.

This is a way to feed someone who is on a ventilator or cannot swallow due to stroke or cancer. She said that it is usually only used in extreme cases.

Cimperman said that even a healthy person can be affected by the tube. “It can lead to serious complications such as infections, higher sodium levels and dehydration. What would make people want to carry a tube in their nose?

Melinda Hemmelgarn is a Columbia-based registered dietitian and host of Food Sleuth radio. She said that it was crazy to think about putting a tube in your nose to lose weight. This sounds like someone is trying to make a lot of money off the vulnerabilities of another person. This idea is a no-no.”

Do not become overweight

Hemmelgarn encouraged anyone considering a diet to keep food in perspective. It’s a gift. It is how we nourish ourselves, and keep well.

Hemmelgarn says that marketing this diet to brides is a way to play into our weight-obsessed society.

Anyone preparing to marry should eat healthy, exercise regularly, and eat fresh, organic, whole foods.

Blinten said that there is no one-size fits all solution for long-term weight loss. A Mediterranean diet that focuses on fruits, vegetables, beans, fish, olive oil, and whole grains is a good option for long-term weight loss.

Blinten stated that many people fall for wacky diets. However, there is no quick fix. Reducing refined carbohydrate intake and replacing them by fresh fruits, vegetables and lean proteins, as well as avoiding processed foods and too many additives, will help you stay healthy over the long-term.

Cimperman stated that the best way to lose weight is to set realistic goals, and then ask yourself what your diet plan is.

  • Good
    For the long-term
  • Includes
    exercise
  • Meets
    your long-term health goals.

She warned that if the answers are not affirmative, it is a red flag.

Blinten recommended that dieters avoid skipping meals as your body will go into overdrive when you eat again. This can cause you to eat more than usual. She recommended eating your largest meal at noon, and then having a healthy snack in the afternoon.

She explained that it keeps your metabolism and insulin levels regular.

Exercise is vitally important, too. A plan that includes a muscle-enhancement program will help you achieve your goals faster.

Hemmelgarn said, “Stop reading fashion magazines. They can make us feel insecure. You should consider this crazy approach to weight loss. Go for a walk right now. It will clear your mind.”
