Winter is coming, and it’s time to prepare for the snow and ice. Snow removal can be a daunting task, but there are some hacks that will make this process much easier. Here are 8 tips on how you can remove snow from your property with ease.

8 Tips for Snow and Ice Removal This Winter

Use top-quality ice melt

This is an obvious one, but you will be surprised how much poor-quality deicers there are on the shelves today. Make sure that you choose a product that won’t damage your driveway and sidewalks. You can find this out by reading the label or asking an expert at your local hardware store for assistance.

NorthRock Minerals produce some of the best ice melt products on the market today. Check out their variety of deicers to find out which one would best meet your needs.

Make use of salt brine if possible

Salt brine is something you should consider using before the snow even starts to fall, as it will help break up ice when temperatures drop below freezing.

This kind of deicer works much faster than traditional rock salt, so it will get the job done in no time.

Use a plastic tarp

If you don’t want or don’t have the time to show or blow the snow away, you can place plastic tarps over areas you anticipate will be covered in snow. When the flurries finally stop, you can remove the tarp, and all of the snow will be gone with it.

The only downside to this tip is that you might need a few tarps for big areas or one very large tarp if it’s really heavy snowfall.

Pre-salt

Pre-salting makes everything easier when the snow finally comes. It prevents snow from sticking to surfaces which makes shovelling much easier.

All you have to do is spread salt over the areas where snow may fall, and voila – no more hassle with removing it later on.

Have the right shovels

Having the right tools for the job makes all of the difference. If you have a big driveway or sidewalk, investing in one large snow shovel to do this entire area at once will be much faster than taking breaks to refill your smaller scoop shovel.

If possible, get a shovel with an ergonomic handle and metal blade – these make life so much easier when it comes time for winter removal.

Use a leaf blower

You can use your leaf blower to get rid of the light snow that accumulates. This works well when you don’t want to get excessive amounts of snow in your shovel, but it still needs to be removed from the surfaces.

Blowing the snow is much faster than scooping it up. You can also use your leaf blower to remove ice from walkways and driveways without damaging them, leaving you more time for other projects.

Use sand

Sand is a great way to increase traction on slippery sidewalks and driveways. It’s also a lot cheaper than some of the other options out there, which is always nice when you’re working with a budget during the winter months. You can use it right before the snow falls or after everything has already accumulated – whichever works best for your situation.

Use hot water

You can easily melt away the ice and snow, pouring hot water over it. This is a great option if you need to get rid of ice that has formed on pipes – just pour the hot liquid directly onto the frozen areas and they will start to melt away in no time.
