Anamika Madan recently discussed the food and nutrition trends expected to take hold in the new year.

GREENWICH, CT / Trends tend to come and go every year. Some last just a couple of months while others remain popular for several years. In the field of health and wellness, Anamika Madan is already seeing the food and nutrition trends that are likely to arise in the year 2021

“We’re going to see a lot in the direction of functional nutrition,” Anamika Madan said. “With the pandemic still looming, people are becoming more concerned with how what they consume can affect their immunity and overall health.”

Anamika Madan stated that we can expect more people to be interested in immunity boosters as opposed to foods that are simply filling. People will be more concerned with the roles ingredients play in improving their overall physical and mental health. Anamika Madan cited a study by Market Research, which stated that 50 percent of consumers said they took more supplements to improve their immune health in 2020.

“We can expect to see the food industry focusing more on immune function within their products and on their packaging too,” Anamika Madan said. “There are no proven foods, herbs, or nutrients to cure COVID-19 right now, but we will see a rise in companies claiming their foods can help prevent it. This will probably result in more people eating healthier items, but it’s also something to look out for in terms of advertising tricks.”

Anamika Madan explained that mental health has become a major concern for a growing number of people during the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic, and the lock-downs driven by it, have caused many people to reflect on their mental health and how to maintain a more positive mental state. Anamika Madan stated this may put more of a focus on certain vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, like B vitamins, zinc, healthy fats, fibers, and more. Probiotics have also been linked to a healthier gut and mental well-being, so we’ll likely see a rise in the popularity of fermented items like kombucha, kimchi, and sauerkraut.

“We’re bound to find beverage companies offering products with ingredients that improve sleep or reduce stress,” Anamika Madan said. “This can be in the form of ‘functional beverages,’ which may include anxiety-reducing compounds.”

Anamika Madan explained that an example of one of these beverages would be the Mushroom Hot Chocolate by Four Stigmatic. The hot chocolate is said to contain reishi, which is known to create a calmer state, reduce stress, and promote a deeper sleep. Anamika Madan said she also expects to see a rise in the purchase and use of cannabidiol (CBD) products.

“With 2020 being one of the oddest years to date for many of us, we may be able to see a greater shift in health trends in 2021 than most other years,” Anamika Madan said. “Overall, the general shift toward a healthier, immunity-based diet may be a positive for society as a whole.”
