Fear the Walking Dead season 6 looks to shake things up with its storytelling format, as it adopts a new anthology-style approach to its episodes.
Fear the Walking Dead season 6 looks to reinvent itself by adopting an anthology format. Following the monumental success of The Walking Dead, AMC sought to expand its world with the creation of its first spin-off. Fear the Walking Dead premiered in 2015 and acted as something of a prequel to the original series, as it took place at the beginning of the zombie apocalypse. It first focused on a Los Angeles family and their friends as they struggled to survive amid the walkers, but Fear the Walking Dead has since expanded its scope to others, including a few Walking Dead transplants.
The biggest question going into Fear the Walking Dead actually pertains to one of those crossover characters: Lennie James’ Morgan Jones. Morgan joined Fear the Walking Dead in its fourth season and quickly became one of the show’s most pivotal players. The end of Fear the Walking Dead season 5 saw Lennie shot and left for dead by big bad Virginia (Colby Minifie), and since then, fans have wondered if Morgan would pull through or not. Luckily, the season 6 trailer revealed at Comic-Con@Home (which echoed an earlier teaser) seemed to confirm he will be back, if in a slightly altered state.
In addition to the trailer, the Fear the Walking Dead Comic-Con@Home panel also offered some fresh insight into what fans can expect from season 6. Executive producer Ian Goldberg revealed season 6 is actually going to operate differently than past seasons: It’s going to be more of an anthology. Goldberg explained:
The other thing that we’re really excited about is that we are going to do a sort of an anthology structure to the episodes where we really – we get to deep dive into exactly what these characters are going through within Virginia’s communities in the style of some of the episodes we’ve done in the past that we’ve loved, like John Dorie and Laura in season 4, or Alicia and Charlie in the house in episode 410. You’re gonna see a lot more of that kind of storytelling in season 6.
This was further supported later in the panel, when Walking Dead franchise head honcho Scott Gimple described season 6 as “sixteen little movies.” Fear the Walking Dead‘s season 5 finale left its core group split up, as everyone ventured off in separate directions. Because of that, this format makes a lot of sense. It can give Fear the Walking Dead time to properly explore where each character has gone before they (hopefully) all come together once again. Additionally, this ensures Fear the Walking Dead will feel fresh; it’s a brand new format, which gives the show a bit more freedom in how it operates.
While Fear the Walking Dead season 6 did in fact receive an official release date (October 11), it still might run into some issues as it rolls out. Production on the season was shut down back in March due to COVID-19, and things have yet to resume. At Comic-Con@Home, it was revealed that a majority of the first half of the season has been filmed, and all of the scripts for season 6 have been completed. This means that while production is ready to get going as soon as possible, there might be a greater delay once the episodes actually start rolling out. Hopefully, though, it won’t be too long of a delay.
