The Xbox Games Showcase included some titles coming to PlayStation 5, but the number of confirmed PS5 releases from the event is actually fairly low.
Microsoft’s recent Xbox Games Showcase revealed several new titles coming to Xbox Series X and Xbox One, but not every game it showed was an Xbox exclusive. Still, the number of Xbox Series X reveals confirmed for PlayStation 5 is actually relatively small. Only a handful of games will come to PS5 for sure, and Microsoft’s official language leaves the status of many other titles in a confusing spot.
In the pre-show and the showcase proper, Microsoft spotlighted 27 games headed to Xbox systems. Fans finally got a closer look at Halo Infinite (perhaps too close), Obsidian Entertainment revealed the new, Skyrim-like Avowed, and other first-party studios gave updates on games like Everwild, Grounded, and Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2.
After focusing mostly on Xbox Game Studios titles like these, Microsoft ran through several third-party games labeled “Console Launch Exclusive.” The phrasing seemed to indicate these would be limited-time exclusives, coming to other consoles at a later date, but then Microsoft revealed Image & Form’s “Console Launch Exclusive“ The Gunk is actually a full-on Xbox (and PC) exclusive. This makes deciphering which games could come to PS5 a difficult task.
Which Xbox Showcase Games Are Coming To PlayStation 5
Xbox Games That Could Come To PS5
The following list of titles are Xbox “Console Launch Exclusives,” but could come to PS5 in the future. However, because The Gunk set the precedent that any of these games could end up releasing on Xbox only, this list is subject to change.
- S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 (GSC Game World) – TBA
- Warhammer 40,000: Darktide (Fatshark) – 2021
- The Medium (Bloober Team) – TBA
- New Genesis: Phantasy Star Online 2 (Sega) – 2021
- CrossfireX (SmileGate/Remedy) – 2020
Additionally, two games from the pre-show have only been announced for Xbox systems and PC, but they also haven’t been specifically listed as Xbox exclusives, meaning they could come to PlayStation 5 eventually.
- Echo Generation (Cococucumber) – TBA
- Hello Neighbor 2 (Dynamic Pixels) – 2021
Xbox Games Confirmed For PlayStation Platforms
While the above games’ status is murky, the following reveals from the showcase are actually confirmed for PlayStation systems.
- The Outer Worlds: Peril On Gorgon (Obsidian Entertainment) – September 9, 2020
- Psychonauts 2 (Double Fine) – TBA
- Tetris Effect Connected – Holiday 2020
- Balan Wonderland (BALAN Company/Square Enix) – Spring 2021
As clarified by a PlayStation YouTube trailer, The Outer Worlds’ initial cross-platform release means its DLC will still come to PS4. Psychonauts 2 was planned for a PS4 release before Microsoft bought Double Fine, and the developer has promised it will still release outside of the Xbox ecosystem – though a PS5 release has not been announced. And while Tetris Effect Connected was one of the showcase’s “Console Launch Exclusive” announcements, developer Enhance Experience’s official trailer for the game clarified the multiplayer expansion will come to PS4 (no word on PS5) in summer 2021.
That leaves only one game from the showcase, Sega’s Balan Wonderland, confirmed for both PS4 and PS5, as a PlayStation trailer announced. Speaking to Kotaku, many of the other games’ publishers would not say whether they plan to launch on PS5, but here’s hoping fans will get some clarification soon.
