Season by season, category by category, the international award spent the year composing a single image — what a business leader must be able to do, and to prove, in the mid-2020s.
Over the course of 2024, the Velto Awards named its laureates in four categories: AI & Digital Transformation, Business Growth & Strategy Excellence, Sustainable Futures Leadership, and European Beauty & Wellness Innovators. Each category ran as its own competition on its own schedule, with winners announced at different points of the year rather than at a single year-end ceremony. More than three hundred participants from a range of countries entered across the four tracks; fewer than twenty made the final lists, selected by a jury of several dozen senior professionals, industry experts, and entrepreneurs.
Award seasons usually produce rankings. This one produced something closer to a composite sketch. Read side by side, the four categories work less like separate contests and more like four sittings for the same portrait — each adding one trait to the image of the leader the jury was looking for. Assembled together, the traits are specific enough to be worth naming.
Trait one: technology that actually ships
The AI & Digital Transformation category — the most crowded of the four — drew a clear line between talking about technology and delivering it. Its laureates were recognized not for visions but for working systems: a Digital Platform Visionary of the Year award went to the architect of a streaming platform that reshaped how digital products scale globally; a Digital Health Innovation Award honored an executive turning complex device engineering into practical health solutions; Excellence in Advanced Manufacturing recognized a leader in high-precision optical production; Excellence in Product & Business Analysis and Excellence in Mobile Multiplayer Design completed the set. Different industries, one requirement: the technology has to run, not merely impress.
Trait two: growth that survives an audit
The largest category, Business Growth & Strategy Excellence, added the second trait — and it is not the one its name suggests. Alongside expected nominations for market leadership in fintech, SaaS, and platform businesses (Category-Defining Market Leadership, Cross-Border Strategy Excellence, SaaS Growth Leadership), the jury placed an Operational Excellence Award for a leader in global supply and manufacturing strategy — and, most tellingly, Excellence in Financial Integrity & Analysis for a forensic accounting professional. The message of that pairing is hard to miss: in 2024, expansion counts only when the numbers behind it withstand disciplined review.
Trait three: the long horizon
The final trait came from the two smallest categories. Sustainable Futures Leadership recognized an entrepreneur building innovation ecosystems and a project leader in environmental infrastructure delivery; European Beauty & Wellness Innovators honored the head of one of Europe’s strongest circular marketplaces (Circular Economy Innovator of the Year) and the founder of a consumer brand built on responsible growth (Consumer Brand Innovation Award). Where the first two traits describe how a leader operates today, this one measures whether the operation deserves to exist in ten years.
The portrait of the 2024 leader
Put the three sittings together and the finished portrait emerges. The leader of 2024, as drawn by the Velto Awards, holds no particular title and comes from no particular industry. It is someone who converts technology into systems that ship; who grows at a pace their own accounting can defend; and who plans on a horizon longer than the next reporting cycle. Charisma appears nowhere among the criteria — the award’s stated framework emphasizes governance, operational resilience, measurable impact, and execution-focused leadership instead.
That is a quieter definition of leadership than the business press usually celebrates, and a more demanding one: every trait in it can be verified, which means every trait in it can be failed. Whether the wider market adopts this portrait remains to be seen. The Velto Awards, for its part, has already hung it on the wall.
