Pakistan Institute of Labour Education and Research has organized a national labour conference in Islamabad to advocate the rights of workers and highlight the exploitations they suffer. Country Director FES Pakistan Dr. Jochen Hippler, Shehzada Zulfiqar of PFUJ, ILO representative, Khalid Mehmood of LEF and other labour support organizations attended the event.

Leading political economist Dr. Pervez Tahir commented on the conference that IMF polices are deteriorating rights of working class. Moreover; Tax exemption will also affect industrialist followed by labour class. Inadequate economic policies and apathy of government affecting purchase power parity PPP of working class, minimum wage of 25K of Sindh should be implemented in other provinces as well, he added.

Decent work country programme of ILO is only providing technical assistance, quoted by ILO Programme Coordinator in the conference. ILO only support employers and employees consultation and bridge the gap for consensus with partners. Followed by the pandemic, ILO is working extensively to curb the menace of unemployment by promoting the standards of decent work.

Veteran trade unionist Mr. Khursheed and Mr. Nizamani pointed out that ILO must ensure that government must comply the ratified ILO conventions. He also emphasized that references of Mongolia and Germany help us clarified the eminence of one confederation, we must ensure the annexation of all partner unions for collective rights of working class in Pakistan.

Federal and provisional government have failed to implement on article 17, neither ILO body can safeguard the due rights of workers in Pakistan. The GSP Plus agreement is not being implemented in the spirit of the agreement. The Federal Government is continuing its pessimistic acts against the Media workers and Journalists to cover up its bad governance which is a matter of concern for all sections

. Government is burying the facts of labour exploitations therefore an ILO Commission be formed for the rights of workers as enshrined in ILO conventions and constitution of Pakistan, Liaquat Sahi (SBP Union) demanded. The 18th Amendment has lost the rights of million Industry wide workers. The Federal Ministry of Labour, which represents millions of workers in the Federal Cabinet, has been abolished. Collective platform for trade unions in Pakistan is mandatory to safeguard the rights of laborer.

Meanwhile unionists Abdul Lateef Nizamani, Nasir Mansoor, Aslam Wafa, Sultan Khan have highlighted the issues of their provinces and shared the updates of their provincial consultation with local unions for one confederation. Workers of the Pakistan were united to form one confederation on upcoming month following the constitutional amendments recommend by provincial bodies.

Karamat Ali- Executive director PILER, has applauded the unprecedented unity of workers after years of consultations and formed a committee for national convention preparations and suggested amendments in the constitutions. He also announced that December 15th is the last day to apply for joining the confederation for any union. The conference ends with the commitment to prosper democracy, workers’ rights and decent work for all.
