It’s the Milwaukee Bucks vs. the Phoenix Suns in the 2021 NBA Finals, and Game 1 tips off on Tuesday, July 6 (7/6/2021) at 9:00 p.m. ET at Talking Stick Resort Arena.

The Bucks beat the Atlanta Hawks in six games, culminating in a 118-107 win on Saturday to become Eastern Conference Champions. Khris Middleton put up 32 points for Milwaukee. Jrue Holiday was the next highest scorer with 27 points. Milwaukee led by just 4 points at halftime, then took off in the 3rd period, putting up 44 points to Atlanta’s 29. Atlanta bounced back, outscoring Milwaukee in the 4th, but it wasn’t enough to change the outcome.

The Suns also beat the Clippers in six games. They finished with a 130-103 point win on Wednesday, their most dominant performance of the series. Chris Paul put up 41 points across 35 minutes played. Devin Booker was the next highest scorer with 22 points.

Make way for something new in the NBA Finals.

Milwaukee hasn’t been to the NBA Finals since 1974 and Phoenix hasn’t been to the NBA Finals since 1993, two stats that have been repeated so often over the last few days that the Bucks and Suns probably wouldn’t mind if they don’t hear them again for the next few decades.

But there is a whole lot of new in these NBA Finals. Consider:

It’s the first time since 1998 that the finals will be played without LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan or Dwyane Wade.

It’s the first time since 1983 that nobody in the NBA Finals has been, or will be, a teammate of Shaquille O’Neal. You read that correctly. Every title series from 1984 through 2020 featured at least one player who had been (or would eventually be) teammates with O’Neal, a list that includes names like Greg Kite, John Salley, Byron Scott, Steve Kerr, Leandro Barbosa, Danny Green and Matt Barnes (along with everyone he played with on the 1995 Orlando Magic, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2004 Los Angeles Lakers teams, and the 2006 Miami Heat). Though there is one technicality at play here: Phoenix guard Chris Paul and O’Neal were All-Star Game teammates.

How to watch the 2021 NBA Finals

Without the Los Angeles Lakers and the Brooklyn Nets. Or, as Nelson Muntz would say on “The Simpsons,” “Heh-heh.”

Maybe the NBA and ABC would have preferred a matchup between teams in the nation’s two largest TV markets. Instead they got No. 11 Phoenix and No. 37 Milwaukee.

Because the Suns and the Bucks series is going to be better. Maybe. Whatever the case, it’s going to be good TV.

Certainly the storylines are there. First and foremost this is the final stop on the Chris Paul Redemption Tour. If you haven’t heard a lot about that already, you haven’t been listening. Paul’s a Hall-of-Fame player who could never get to the Finals. Now he’s finally here.

When do the NBA Finals start

You can watch Game 1 at 6 p.m. Arizona time Tuesday on ABC15. Mike Breen, Jeff Van Gundy and Mark Jackson will call the action. You can also stream the game on the ESPN app, which requires you to log in with your TV provider.

For DirecTV users and viewers outside metro Phoenix, check listings for your local ABC affiliate.

It’s the end of a playoff drought for the Suns. They hadn’t made the playoffs in 11 years; now they’re a step away from winning it all. If they pull this off it’s one of the great turnarounds in sports history — not just basketball.

It’s the Devin Booker ascendance. It’s the Deandre Ayton grows up run. It’s the wait, Cam Payne is playing like that series.

And that’s just the Suns.

For the Bucks, this was to be the final step in cementing Giannis Antetokounmpo’s reputation as an all-time great player.

Now he might not play. And that stinks.

Which brings up another point. You know how else to watch the NBA Finals?

There’s no question that the Suns have benefitted from the untimely injuries of great players in every series they’ve won on the way to the Finals. So what? Injuries alter the course of every season. And the Suns are a walking hospital ward themselves.

Paul has been banged up since the playoffs started, and missed two games after being placed in the NBA’s COVID-19 protocol. Booker got his nose broken in about 27 places — note: slight exaggeration. Cameron Johnson missed a game with a non-COVID-19-related illness. Payne hurt his ankle.

Bucks vs Suns Preview

Two long-struggling franchises take the stage for the NBA Finals as the Suns face off against the Bucks. Phoenix has never won an NBA title, while the Bucks have captured just a single banner in their existence, which came back in 1971. The Bucks have not been back to the Finals since they won, while the Suns have not been there since 1993.

It’s also the first trip for Suns veteran guard Chris Paul to the Finals after years of being so close. He’s dealt with injuries this offseason which has slowed his production, but delivered his Mona Lisa as Phoenix punched its ticket against the Clippers — 41 points on 16-of-24 shooting, including 7-of-8 on 3-pointers. The “Point God” also notched eight assists with zero turnovers.

“I’ve told you guys from the jump I wanted to stay out of his way. There were questions about his production before tonight, and in my heart I felt like it was a matter of time. I didn’t know it was going to be like that, but that’s who Chris is. He was tired and he was still making those kinds of plays — getting to the basket, the threes, orchestrating everything,” Suns head coach Monty Williams said.

“I’m grateful that I get to coach him again. When I first had him in 2010, and he went on actually to come here [to play in Los Angeles with the Clippers], in your wildest dreams you couldn’t have put it together in this way. So to watch him out there tonight, I was so grateful to be on his side.”

The Bucks got past the upstart Atlanta Hawks in the Eastern Conference Finals without former MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, who suffered a hyperextended knee that looked like it could be much worse. It’s reportedly a day-to-day situation for Antetokounmpo.

“I mean, [Giannis] and the sports performance team, they have been together a long time. It’s special to watch their relationship” Bucks head coach Mike Budenholzer told reporters. “It’s special to watch the communication, the trust that he has. You have to listen to the player and then you have to listen to the sports performance group, and at some point Jon Horst and myself are part of the conversations, but it’s just a day-to-day thing. We’ll update it when appropriate.”

How to Stream NBA Finals for Free?

If you simply can’t be around a TV during the games, then you can stream games using the broadcaster’s affiliated app/website. For instance, if you’re already subscribed to ESPN, you could get your playoff fix on WatchESPN. However, you would need to already have a cable subscription for this.

More: NBA Buffstreams

A more viable solution for cord cutters would be to watch the games on a platform that carries a combination of ESPN and TNT. For example, services including YouTube TV, Hulu+ and Sling TV will offer both channels.Of course, there are some other options like fuboTV, ESPN+, or NBATV that will stream some, but not all, of the playoff games.

If you’re already subscribed to one or more of these platforms, then you’re good to go. However even if you aren’t, most platforms offer free trials. Now might be the perfect time to take your free week/month.

Why Was Reddit NBA Streams Banned?

The r/nbastreams subreddit was one of the most valuable resources for basketball fans around the world. Links, which were reliable for the most part, were posted for every single NBA game.

Fans were also spoiled, considering they could watch every single game, the draft, and more in high definition. And the best part about all of this was that the streams were completely free.

No payment, no account, just a link with a couple of pop-ups here and there. However, the free ride came to an end when Reddit banned the page at the start of last season. So, why did Reddit ban one of their most popular pages?

The short answer to this question is that the subreddit was technically illegal. If you watch other sports, you probably weren’t too surprised to see Reddit make this decision. Before the ban, the page for soccer, cricket, and MMA streams were taken down.

Afterwards, the subreddits for NFL and MLB streams were given a similar treatment. The basic problem is that posting free links is a clear case of copyright infringement and leagues were starting to take notice.

Obviously, free streams lead to a loss of revenue for the league and broadcasters so action needed to be taken. Interestingly though, Reddit was never forced to ban the subreddit, but rather chose to do so according to their own repeat infringement policy.

The policy reads:

Our policy is to close the accounts of users, in appropriate circumstances, who have repeatedly been charged with copyright infringement. Sometimes a repeat infringement problem is limited to one user and we close just that user’s account. Other times, the problem pervades a whole subreddit community and we close the subreddit.

Plan for next season: What is the Best Way to Stream NBA Games?

Unfortunately, there are currently no entirely free and legal ways to watch the NBA. The owners of the Reddit NBA Streams page clearly haven’t gone into hiding, returning with a page called r/adamsilverfanpage, a ironic jab at NBA commissioner Adam Silver.

This time, the people running the page have been more careful so to not violate any of Reddit’s rules. Regardless, it is highly recommended that you choose from the following paid options to get your NBA fix.

Across the long NBA season, games are broadcasted on ESPN, TNT, ABC, NBA TV, and RSNs (regional sports networks). Therefore, it is hard to find a single streaming service that can satisfy all your needs given the variety of broadcast rights.

A number of platforms including, but not restricted to YouTube TV, fuboTV, Vidgo, Hulu+Live Sports, AT&T, and Sling TV offer their own unique packages.

The best thing you can do is look into each streaming service to see what they offer and at what price, looking out specifically for your local market games.

Another option to look into is the league’s official streaming service: League Pass. Technically speaking, this is the only way to watch every single game live and on-demand.

But there’s a catch. Only international subscribers will have access to every single game. Due to the blackout rules in the States, fans living in the US can only watch out-of-market games live.

Additionally, you can’t watch nationally televised games live either, which unfortunately includes the playoffs. Therefore, this service is of great use for hardcore fans, but it is especially valuable for fans who don’t live in the market where their favorite team plays.
