Get Your BBQ Grill Ready for Summer Fun

With summer season around the corner, you can be excited about hosting BBQ parties with your friends and family. But if you plan to cook barbecue dishes at home after a long time, it will be better to give your grill a thorough cleanup. You have to do this for the health of your device and home too. Otherwise, fire hazards can occur due to grime and grease buildups. You may not believe it, but people have seen their grilling experience turning into a nightmare because of one mistake. Anyway, a soiled grill cannot do anything good to your food also.

Please don’t panic and drop your BBQ program. You can maintain your barbecue grill effortlessly with simple cleaning steps. It will keep your food healthy while cooking safely. So, here are some tips for pellet smokers and charcoal grills. Let’s go through them quickly.

Investigate Your Grill

For this, you will have to disassemble your grill to reach out to the grill chamber. It happens to be the dirtiest part of the grill because of oil drippings and food particles that cause buildup there. That’s why you will have to open the lid and take out all the grill grates. Store them in a safe place. Does it have metal heat diffusers? Just like gas grills, your barbecue grill can also have them. You can check the burner areas for them and remove those too.

Clean the Interiors

There will be food and oil residue inside the grill or grill box. You can take an inexpensive metal or plastic knife to scuff the gunk from the sides of the main grill chamber. You can use other tools also with a flat surface as the knife. However, it should have enough space for a firm grip. Experts suggest people should wear safety gloves to avoid getting their hands dirty.

Deep cleaning is a must, no matter what type of grill you own. Charcoal and wood pellet grills collect ash in coal trays and fireboxes, which disrupt airflow and cooking. And if it is a pellet grill, the risk of misfiring is difficult to avoid. You can even expect full fire, especially if you had added extra fuel for igniting the grill. Hence, it is ideal that you clean the grill of ash buildups. Of course, the ash should be cool when you do this.

Remove Clogging from Burner Tubes

A gas grill usually faces the challenge of blocked burner tubes. The first sign of it can be the lower burning flames. Or, if you notice orange flame instead of blue, it is another signal that your burner tubes need attention.  Some gas grills can have multiple burner tubes, and others just one.  To clear clogging from them, you can resort to a steel wire or nylon brush and insert the same in the small holes of the tubes. The cleaning tool should go inside the pipe from the center and scrub the spots sideways. Avoid rubbing it up and down as debris can enter the tube further down rather than going out.

Do the Grates

Once you implement that step, you can put your grill together and run it at its highest temperature with a closed hood. Let a few minutes pass, and open the hood to rub the grates with a metal grill brush efficiently. It can demand some force from your end. If you don’t have a metal brush, you can follow this task with a nylon brush. But the grill should be cold when you scrub the grates.

Do you feel the grime is stubborn? It means your grill requires deep cleaning. There are two ways to achieve this. First, you can soak grates in soapy water overnight to allow the carbonized grime to become loose and leave its place. If you use a modern kitchen fixture with pull down function, filling any utensil doesn’t feel like a job. You can mix dish liquid in the water and leave your grates in it. Or, you can buy any trustworthy easy-rinse formula effective on grease buildup, food particles, and carbon deposits found in areas like grates, smokers, lids, etc.

Prevent Deposits or Buildups

Some habits can help you keep your grill safe from dirt and grease buildups. For example, you can apply a small amount of cooking oil on the grates when the grill is hot, and you are ready to cook. Likewise, you can use half portion of raw onion to rub hot grill grates. It will help season the grates and add moisture too. When organic compounds enter the buildups, they force them to break down. Some people don’t find this much helpful. However, they do admit that it creates a pleasant smell. Nevertheless, if you have a grill brush, you can scrub hot grates before and after your cooking.

As soon as the cleaning project completes, your grill can be ready for use. So, what do you plan to cook in it? Whether it is steaks on your mind or something else, you can be excited to hear that fantastic sizzling sound once again. But it can be disappointing if you don’t manage to flip your meat in one piece because of the sticking issues. Yet you don’t have to worry. You can season the charcoal grill.

Before you start the grill, consider rubbing the grates with a bit of cooking oil. You can add the drops to a napkin for ease of this job. Or, if you have a vegetable oil sprayer, you can spray some from it. With this, you can ensure your steaks don’t stick to the surface and get seared well.

In the end, you need to remember that it can be risky to start a grill after a long time without cleaning it up. It can cause fire accidents due to grease deposits. That’s why it is always better to keep them clean and store them in the same condition. And when the barbecue season arrives, you must remove all the dust, dirt, and grime accumulation first for a safer and happy BBQ experience.
