The coronavirus has monopolized headlines lately and the media are trying to push it as the worst and only humanitarian crisis at the moment. But many forget the state the world was in before the pandemic.

Unrest in the Middle East due to tensions with Syria and Iran has created all sorts of issues in the region. There were also conflicts that were degenerating and are still raging. The world cannot afford to turn a blind eye to those because of sanitary issues. The worst is that Covid is only making matters worse by hindering the flow of aid and workers. Let’s take a look at a few humanitarian crises that need attention at the moment.
Central African Republic
This is one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world, but also one of the most unknown. And the UN is partly to blame for this by declaring the situation in the country as “stable” even if it’s estimated that roughly 50% of the population, 2.8 million to be exact, may need humanitarian help.
It’s also estimated that about 1 in 4 Central Africans have been displaced due to conflict. Covid 19 has also worsened the situation in the country with economic unrest and food insecurity.
Mozambique
Mozambique is another country that doesn’t get mentioned a lot, but it is one with many gripping issues at the moment. The northern part of the country has been dealing with armed conflict for the past 4 years, which has lead to many people being displaced. It has been estimated that about half a million people have been displaced.
This is another crisis that has been exacerbated by the recent pandemic. Access and funding are scarce, and the region also had to deal with extreme weather. Flooding has damaged many displacement sites including 200 shelters.
South Sudan
Civil and political unrest continues to be an issue in South Sudan. There has been a lot of violence from armed groups, which has led to nearly 1 in 3 people in the country being displaced. Food insecurity is a major issue in the country and it’s estimated that about half of the population are facing severe or deadly hunger.
If this is somewhere where you want to help, we suggest that you consider looking at organizations such as Alight. Independent organizations like this work specifically with displaced persons. The best thing is that they don’t only focus on providing refugees with the strict minimum to survive but also create meaningful lives for themselves and get them on the road to self-sustenance.
Chad
Chad is currently in a perfect storm of crises. The region has had to deal with displacement, food insecurity, climate change, and the pandemic. There has also been armed conflict in the Chad basin region. Not to mention the drought that has depleted a large portion of the country’s freshwater.
Humanitarian crises never take a break, and we can’t ignore these at the moment. Let’s make an effort to keep an eye on these issues and remember that we’re all connected.
