Who are the current best quarterbacks in the NFL right now?

The NFL is hurtling along, and the aspirations of the post-season is getting closer for plenty of teams. Who makes the cut and who misses out will largely be down to how their big guns step up between now and then?

With that in mind, here we look at the best quarterbacks in the NFL right now.

Number 5. Kyler Murray

Kyler Murray set a pretty high bar for himself during his rookie campaign where he threw 3,772 yards but he looks on course to smash those numbers this season. His current yardage of 2,644 has him on course to hit over 4,000 and he’s improved his running game too with 10 rushing touchdowns to his name already.

Murray is probably a shoo-in for pass of the season after his Hail Mary against the Buffalo Bills but his stock will go through the roof if he can maintain the form he’s shown up until now. The reason he’s only fifth? His game has been boosted massively by the arrival of DeAndre Hopkins.

Number 4. Drew Brees

If his season began under a cloud of off-field controversy over his Black Lives Matters comments then it’s fair to say the Saints man quickly set about reminding people why he’s in the public eye in the first place. He’s a damn good quarterback. That’s why. With 2,196 yards, 18 passing touchdowns and a league high 73.49% completion rating things were looking positive for Brees and the boys from New Orleans.

Then a sledgehammer sized blow hit; Brees is due to miss several weeks through injury. Taysom Hill just isn’t in the same league and it’s probably the end of their Super Bowl dreams for another year.

Number 3. Ben Roethlisberger

Steelers man Roethlisberger missed nearly all of last season due to injury and his team stuttered their way through a pretty mediocre season. That’s not the case this year though with a fully fit Roethlisberger and co sitting pretty at the top of the AFC North on 10-0, which is the only unbeaten record in the NFL. The quarterback has been a huge part of their success to date with 24 touchdowns to his name.

If he can find a little bit more it’s completely plausible that he ends the season with a career high pass completion too. Who knows, he might be heading to Tampa for a Super Bowl showdown as well.

Number 2. Russell Wilson

When your defense is a liability then you need more than just a sprinkling of star quality going in the other direction. It just so happens the Seahawks have that in Russell Wilson. The team sit in a reasonable position at 7-3 and it’s largely down to their star man carrying the team.

He ranks second overall in yards with 2,986 and third in percentage completed of all quarterbacks who have posted a respectable base number. A lot will be determined by how he finishes the season, but we expect his name to be in the frame for MVP come the end of the campaign.

Number 1. Patrick Mahomes

Patrick Mahomes at number one might look like an easy choice…and it was. Lamar Jackson got the nod as MVP last year but it’s hard to argue against Mahomes ranking as the best NFL quarterback right now.

His current pass completion of 67.91% is comfortably up on his personal best (66.03% in 2018) and he could be pushing towards the 5,000 yard mark again this year. On top of that, he’s thrown 27 touchdowns with just two interceptions against him.

The thing that’s impressed us most though is his mentality. It would have been easy for the 25-year-old to drop his standards after last year’s showing in the Super Bowl. Instead, he’s come back stronger and the NFL betting odds suggest he might lead the Chiefs to consecutive titles.
