Charge faster than the rest with the Reno4 Pro and SuperVOOC 2.0 from OPPO

The race for the ultimate smartphone often finds itself hinging on battery life and recharge times. Great phones can find themselves lacking in the battery department, or they’re simply hindered by a slow charger. OPPO’s new Reno4 Pro helps to turn that idea on its head thanks to a long history of innovation powered by SuperVOOC 2.0 fast charging, the fastest charging technology currently on the market.

Since 2012, large smartphone displays have become the norm, and with them has come higher energy consumption. That set OPPO in motion searching for a more efficient way to charge, and thanks in part to Jialiang Zhang, VOOC fast charging was born. In the years since then, VOOC fast charging has grown to support more than 157 million users worldwide with a safer and faster low voltage system.

Limits are made to be broken

Talking the talk of fast charging is great, but OPPO is already walking the walk and has been since the introduction of the Find X Lamborghini Edition in 2018. As the first phone with the original SuperVOOC technology, the Find X Lamborghini Edition could reach peak charging speeds of 50W. By comparison, even the fastest OnePlus phones charge at around 30W.

A survey conducted in 2016 showed that VOOC fast charging played a key role in many consumers’ buying decisions and the SuperVOOC 2.0 charging on the new Reno4 Pro brings the speed to a wider audience than ever. 65W fast charging is no longer reserved for flagships, as the Reno4 Pro introduces it to the midrange market.

With a maximum speed of 65W, SuperVOOC 2.0 can bring a 4,000mAh battery from dead to 100% charged in just 36 minutes. That means less time charging and more time living your life or spending four hours on YouTube after just five minutes of charging.

Speed and safety working together

Blisteringly fast charging sounds great, but what about the overall health of your battery? After all, a star that burns twice as bright only burns half as long. However, OPPO has figured out the secret recipe that allows for higher speeds without sacrificing your battery.

A standard phone battery can receive currents at up to 5V before voltage reduction is implemented. So how does OPPO manage to pump 10V of power and maintain covetable low voltage fast charging with the new SuperVOOC 2.0 technology? The answer is simple.

Instead of delivering the full 10V charge to a single battery, OPPO relies on a dual-cell design with a series connection between the two. This dual-cell design allows each cell to receive just under 5V charging, maintaining the speed and temperature that make SuperVOOC so valuable. The Reno4 Pro also makes the most of higher-quality components than previous devices to achieve 6.5A of current — 1.5A over the industry standard of USB-C.

An eye to what’s next

SuperVOOC fast charging has helped OPPO to gain a foothold in China and around the world, but it’s not keeping the tech to itself. Rather, OPPO’s technology is at the core of more than 2,500 patent applications worldwide with licenses out to 23 companies.

The implementation of SuperVOOC 2.0 fast charging is only the tip of the iceberg, and OPPO is already outdoing itself by introducing 125W flash charging. It’s twice as fast as SuperVOOC 2.0 — charging a 4,000mAh battery to 100% in as little as 20 minutes while maintaining a surface temperature below 104 degrees. How will the flash charging impact future devices? You’ll have to keep an eye on OPPO to find out.
