If reports from earlier this week are true and multiple NFL teams are interested in bringing Colin Kaepernick back to the league, those clubs are keeping it to themselves.
On Friday morning, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported that no team has yet officially reached out to Kaepernick or his camp.
The 32-year-old, who led the San Francisco 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance, hasn’t played in the NFL since the 2016 season when he famously kneeled during the national anthem ahead of games to protest police violence and racial injustice.
Outside observers and fellow players, such as Chicago Bears defensive tackle Akiem Hicks, have suggested owners unofficially blackballed Kaepernick because of those polarizing demonstrations.
Following the killing of George Floyd, however, players around the league are expected to kneel or otherwise demonstrate if a season gets underway amid the coronavirus pandemic:
Both NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and President Donald Trump have vocally supported a team signing Kaepernick this summer.
Earlier this month, President Trump declared via Twitter he would no longer watch U.S. Soccer matches after the Federation repealed a law that threatened bans for players who didn’t stand during the “Star-Spangled Banner” before matches.
