“Black Widow,” the highly anticipated Marvel film starring longtime Avenger Scarlett Johansson, will premiere on July 9 in theaters and on Disney Plus. To stream the movie while it’s still playing in theaters, Disney Plus subscribers need to pay an extra $30 Premier Access fee.
The film takes place before the events of the latest Marvel films, with Johansson’s titular character dealing with her past as an assassin for hire. Florence Pugh plays a younger assassin who received the same training as Black Widow, while “Stranger Things” star David Harbour plays a Russian hero named Red Guardian.

“Black Widow” will be the first Marvel film released in theaters since “Spider-Man: Far From Home” debuted in July 2019. Disney originally planned to release the film during summer 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the premiere for more than a year. “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” is scheduled for a September 3 theatrical release, and will introduce a new Marvel hero played by Simu Liu.

After that, the rest of Disney’s film slate is theatrical only, so films like Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Eternals, and Free Guy won’t be coming to Disney Premier Access as of yet. But if we’ve learned anything in the past year, it’s that things can rapidly change, so we wouldn’t say Premier Access is definitely over and done with.
Black Widow release
Black Widow director Cate Shortland is hoping Marvel fans will see the film in cinemas even though it will be available on Disney+.
Following more than a year of speculation, Disney finally confirmed in March it would release Black Widow on its streaming service for a Premier Access price at the same time as it opens in cinemas.
While other filmmakers like Christopher Nolan and Dune director Denis Villeneuve have publicly objected to their new films getting hybrid streaming and cinema releases, Cate Shortland took a different approach to Black Widow.
“Well, we made this film to be seen in cinemas, and it’s not so much seen in cinemas, it’s felt in cinemas because we created the sound, and the music, and just the huge beautiful spectacle was to be seen on a big screen,” she told Deadline.
“So, as a director, I want people, if they’re safe, to see it in that environment, but I know some people can’t for a lot of reasons, pandemic and also a lot of reasons. So, it’s really cool that other people will still get to see the movie.”
Disney is taking a separate approach with Black Widow than it has with some of its animated releases, as Luca and Soul didn’t actually require an additional payment to view on Disney+.
Anyone wanting to stream Black Widow on its release date will need to have a Disney+ subscription, plus be willing to shell out $29.99 / £19.99 to own a digital copy of the film. Premier Access is not available for those without a Disney+ subscription.
Black Widow is out in cinemas on July 7 in the UK and on Disney+ with Premier Access on July 9. In the US, it will be released on July 9 both in cinemas and on Disney+ with Premier Access.

Sadly, Marvel’s movie drought has now reached 23 months, but the MCU is finally making its triumphant return to theaters next month with the release of Black Widow.
Two years is much longer than anyone expected to wait between movies when Spider-Man: Far From Home debuted in 2019, but the extended delay comes to an end on July 9th. Not only will Black Widow get a wide release in theaters, but you can also watch the new movie at home… if you have an active Disney+ subscription and are willing to pay $29.99 for Premier Access.
One way or another, hardcore Marvel fans are going to spend money to see Black Widow as soon as it’s available, whether that means going to a movie theater and buying a ticket or ponying up the fee for Premier Access. As for those of you that do not mind waiting until the movie goes free on Disney+, you will not have very long to wait, as Disney revealed on its website that Black Widow will be available for everyone with a Disney+ subscription for no additional charge starting October 6th.
If waiting until October isn’t an option, Disney is giving fans one big reason to see the movie while it’s on the big screen this July. As Deadline reported last week, the IMAX version of Black Widow will feature 22 minutes of footage in an expanded aspect ratio. The scenes have been specially formatted to show up to 26% more of the image on the screen at a 1.90:1 aspect ratio.
IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond spoke to Deadline about the upcoming IMAX version of Black Widow: “Marvel and IMAX have a really great partnership and we think we each complement each other’s brand. We try to do something for the fans to celebrate the relationship.”
