Kristen Stewart To Play Princess Diana In ‘Spencer’ Has Set Social Media Abuzz

Kristen Stewart is set to play Princess Diana in a new movie Spencer, and the casting choice has set social media ablaze.

According to Deadline, the actress will portray the late princess when she decided during a “critical weekend” in the 1990s that her marriage to Prince Charles wasn’t working.

Stewart playing Diana didn’t sit well with fans, and many questioned the filmmakers’ casting choice. “Plenty of British actresses who would have been better for this role, Princess Diana was classy, Kristen is not. They don’t even look alike,” one Twitter user explained. “I always feel like she’s being pushed and forced upon us, she hasn’t stood out in anything,” another said.

However, Stewart’s fans defended her, stating her success in films like Seberg and Personal Shopper. “As a longtime #KristenStewart stan, she can absolutely convey the subtle emotion we see when rewatching Princess Di’s interviews. I’m like the only person pumped for this I swear,” a fan tweeted.

Filmmaker Pablo Larraín defended his decision to cast Stewart as Diana. He told Deadline that Stewart is “one of the greatest actors around today.” Larraín said that Stewart is capable of being “mysterious, fragile and strong,” and the combination is something he would love to see in the character in Spencer. “She’s going to do something stunning and intriguing at the same time,” he added.
