Our Kid’s Favorite Part of Our Trip to NYC – A Private Yacht Charter

Our family trip to New York City was filled with excitement, but the highlight for our kids (and us) was undoubtedly our charter experience with Big Apple Charters. Referred by the concierge at our hotel, who praised the outstanding reputation of Amal, the owner, we embarked on an adventure that left us with cherished memories and fascinating stories.

From the moment we arrived at the pier, the professionalism and warmth of Amal’s team at Big Apple Charters was evident. She personally welcomed us aboard the Hudson Star, a beautiful Cruisers Yacht 38 GLS, that looked like it just came from the factory.  Our crew of Captain Ross and our host Tiffany had friendly smiles and a genuine enthusiasm that set the tone for the day. As a family of five, including three energetic kids, we were delighted to find the spacious boat comfortable and impeccably maintained, with ample room for everyone to explore and enjoy the views.

Our journey began with a smooth sail along the Hudson River, and the crew quickly proved why they came so highly recommended. They engaged us with their knowledge of the city’s iconic landmarks, sharing stories that brought New York’s rich history to life. One of the most memorable anecdotes was about the Statue of Liberty. Our guide humorously recounted how the statue, now a symbol of freedom and democracy, was initially received with mixed feelings by New Yorkers. Apparently, the statue was nicknamed “Lady Liberty” by a local newspaper to drum up public interest, and there were even debates about where to place her. The kids were fascinated to learn that at one point, there were suggestions to put the statue in Central Park or at the entrance of the Brooklyn Bridge!

Speaking of the Brooklyn Bridge, the crew added a unique layer to our appreciation of this architectural marvel. They shared intriguing facts, such as how the bridge, completed in 1883, was designed by John A. Roebling and later completed by his son, Washington Roebling, who oversaw the construction despite being bedridden after an injury. The story of Emily Warren Roebling, Washington’s wife, who became a key figure in the bridge’s completion, captivated us all. She relayed her husband’s instructions and even studied engineering to assist in the construction, effectively becoming the first woman field engineer on a major project.

The charter also offered breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline, the waterfront, and close-up perspectives of the city’s famous bridges and buildings. The kids were thrilled to see helicopters taking off from the helipads, and we all marveled at the scale and beauty of the city from the water. The crew’s hospitality extended to providing custom coloring books for the two little ones.  Captain Ross even got each of them a turn at the helm, including captain’s hats for some memorable photos.  We forgot to bring food, but they had connected with the hotel ahead of time and had snacks and beverages ready for us, ensuring we were well-fed and hydrated throughout the trip.

When we docked, Captain Ross presented each of the kids with a custom “Junior Captain” certificate that was just a great touch.  At least two of them are taking them to school for the first day next fall!

Our experience with Big Apple Charters was more than just a tour; it was a journey through time, narrated with wit and passion by a crew who clearly love what they do. They turned what could have been a simple sightseeing trip into an unforgettable adventure. For any family visiting New York City, a charter with Big Apple Charters is an absolute must. The combination of stunning views, engaging storytelling, and impeccable service ensures a truly memorable experience that lives up to its stellar reputation.

Whether you’re a history buff, a lover of architecture, or simply looking for a fun and educational family outing, Big Apple Charters delivers in every way. Our family left the boat with big smiles and a newfound appreciation for New York City, thanks to an exceptional crew that made the experience as delightful as it was enlightening.
