GLAAD Media Awards Winners List: ‘Pose’, ‘Booksmart’, ‘Schitt’s Creek’ Among Honorees

GLAAD held their very first virtual edition of its GLAAD Media Awards and it was just as spirited and entertaining as if we were in person kiki’ing and honoring media for fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of LGBTQ people and issues. If you weren’t able to watch the virtual ceremony the 31st Annual GLAAD Media Awards will air on Logo on  August 3.

GLAAD Media Awards hosts Gina Yashere and Fortune Feimster

Hosted by poolside and outdoors by comedians Fortune Feimster and Gina Yashere, the virtual ceremony featured performances by Tony Award-winner and The Politician star Ben Platt as well as singer and activist Shea Diamond. The talented Chloe x Halle closed the show with a performance of “Do It” featuring RuPaul’s Drag Race alums Vanessa Vanjie Mateo, Mayhem Miller and Naomi Smalls.

Winners in select categories were revealed throughout the day via Twitter and featured acceptance speeches from each of the award recipients. The groundbreaking Pose slayed the ceremony, as the FX drama took home the award for Outstanding Drama Series with Mj Rodriguez, Billy Porter, Dominique Jackson, Angelica Ross, Indya Moore, Ryan Jamaal Swain, Hailie Sahar, Angel Bismark Curiel and Dyllón Burnside accepting the honor.

The cast shared a few words about how the series not only shook up the TV landscape but to honor the LGBTQ community and center Black and Latinx trans and queer people unapologetically allow themselves to be their “own heroes”.

Meanwhile, Schitt’s Creek was awarded Outstanding Comedy Series with show stars Dan Levy, Karen Robinson and Noah Reid accepting the trophy. On the film side , Booksmart won for Outstanding Film – Wide Release and Olivia Wilde, Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Dever were remotely on hand to accept the award.

The ceremony also featured appearances by Dolly Parton, Lena Waithe Kandi Burruss, Cara Delevingne, Lil Nas X, Ryan O’Connell, Peppermint, Geena Rocero, Lilly Singh, Brian Michael Smith, Dwyane Wade & Gabrielle Union, Lena Waithe and GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis.
