The Chinese tech giant has revealed that its Apollo Computing Unit, billed as the &ldquo;world&rsquo;s first production-ready&rdquo; autonomous driving computer, is ready for use on the streets. It&rsquo;s an unassuming box (see below), but it can handle massive amounts of data from five cameras and 12 ultrasonic radars.<\/p>\n<p>It&rsquo;s based on Xilinx processors and boasts microcontrollers from chip maker Infineon.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div id=\"engadget-post-continued-contents\" class=\"o-article_block pb-15 pb-5@m- mt-n35 mt-n25@m mt-n15@s\">\n<div class=\"grid@tl+\">\n<div class=\"full-width@tp- grid@tl+__cell col-8-of-12@tl+\">\n<div class=\"article-text c-gray-1 no-review\">\n<p>You&rsquo;ll see the ACU in use quickly. It will power Apollo Valet Parking, a team-up with WM Motor that will automatically pick you up and otherwise streamline valet service&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2019-07-23-daimler-bosch-mercedes-automated-self-driving-valet.html\">without requiring drivers<\/a>. It&rsquo;s due to launch in the second half of 2020 and could be helpful during a pandemic, when you probably don&rsquo;t want other people touching your car.<\/p>\n<p>The firm isn&rsquo;t the only one working on self-driving computers. NVIDIA is quickly landing deals with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2019-10-09-toyota-gm-nvidia-and-others-team-up-on-self-driving-car-chips.html\">GM, Toyota and others<\/a>&nbsp;that could make it a powerhouse, for instance. However, Baidu might be the first to put a platform into real-world (albeit limited) use.
