It&rsquo;s the latest company to shift resources to the Lone Star State, which has quickly become a hotbed of autonomous vehicle testing.<\/p>\n<p id=\"bhPjnw\">Aurora says it is bringing a &ldquo;small&rdquo; fleet of vehicles to the Dallas-Fort Worth area within the next few weeks. The company tests out its autonomous vehicle hardware and software in both Chrysler Pacifica minivans &mdash; also popular with Urmson&rsquo;s former employers at Waymo (n&eacute;e Google) &mdash; and Class 8 tractor trailers. Aurora says its first commercial service will be in trucking &ldquo;where the market is largest today, the unit economics are best, and the level of service requirements is most accommodating.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-float-right\">\n<aside id=\"uWIs1I\"><q>TRUCKING IS &ldquo;WHERE THE MARKET IS LARGEST TODAY&rdquo;<\/q><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"vr0aDQ\">&ldquo;Whether a vehicle is moving people or goods, an investment in foundational elements like world-class perception, localization, and motion planning can&rsquo;t be sidestepped,&rdquo; the company said in a statement. &ldquo;Our early focus on the complexities of surface street driving accelerates our ability to handle the hardest aspects of trucking. Aurora newly acquired a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/aurora-blog\/aurora-to-acquire-blackmore-industry-leading-lidar-company-58b04f4979b9\">LIDAR sensor maker<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/aurora-blog\/aurora-to-acquire-blackmore-industry-leading-lidar-company-58b04f4979b9\">debuted its own in-house LIDAR<\/a>, hired a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/aurora-blog\/welcome-sandor-barna-auroras-new-vp-of-hardware-2d925c4081ce\">VP of hardware<\/a>, and took an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/amazon-aurora-self-driving-investment-funding-series-b\/\">investment from Amazon<\/a>. It also started giving reporters and members of the media test rides in its vehicles.<\/p>\n<p id=\"RzkDGY\">To date, Aurora has raised $690 million in funding, and Urmson has been hailed as the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.greylock.com\/our-investment-in-aurora-a-safe-path-to-scale-autonomous-vehicles-bd0680fa4fe0\">&ldquo;Henry Ford of autonomous vehicles,&rdquo;<\/a>&nbsp;thanks to his work helping to pioneer Google&rsquo;s self-driving car initiative. His co-founders are Sterling Anderson, who helped lead Tesla&rsquo;s Model X project, and Drew Bagnell, who ran a research lab at Carnegie Mellon then left to work on autonomous vehicles at Uber. Fiat Chrysler, Hyundai, and EV startup&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2018\/02\/09\/aurora-will-power-byton-evs-autonomous-driving-features\/\">Byton<\/a>&nbsp;are also Aurora customers. The company raised half a billion dollars last year&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2019\/2\/7\/18215575\/amazon-innovation-self-driving-car-startup-google-tesla-executives\">in a funding round led by Amazon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"AE53Re\">The company also has had some setbacks. Last year,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2019\/6\/11\/18661517\/vw-amazon-ford-self-driving-car-startup-funding\">Volkswagen broke with Aurora<\/a>&nbsp;after securing a deal with Ford to collaborate on electric and autonomous vehicles.<\/p>\n<p id=\"d4Ih7v\">Texas is now firmly one of the top states in the US for AV testing. In addition to Aurora, the state is also playing host to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2019\/9\/25\/20882724\/ford-autonomous-cars-vehicles-av-austin-texas-taxi-delivery\">Ford \/ Argo<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2019\/9\/17\/20870969\/uber-self-driving-car-testing-dallas\">Uber<\/a>, self-driving truck startup&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/7\/15\/21324029\/tusimple-navistar-self-driving-truck-deal-investment\">TuSimple<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/1\/23\/21078438\/waymo-self-driving-minivans-trucks-texas-new-mexico\">Waymo<\/a>, as well as a remote-operated driverless shuttle in service at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2019\/8\/27\/20834921\/texas-am-self-driving-shuttle-designated-driver-remote\">Texas A&amp;M University<\/a>.
