The announcement marks the first time a system with ARM processors has debuted on the number one spot on the list. What&#8217;s more, the supercomputer is located in Japan, not the US or China like so many of the systems that have dominated the list in recent years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At the heart of the RIKEN Center for Computational Science&#8217;s Fugaku supercomputer is Fujitsu&#8217;s 48-core A64FX system-on-a-chip. Working together, 158,976 of these chips put up a benchmark of 415.5 petaflops and a peak performance of 1 exaflop. To put that performance in perspective, Oak Ridge National Lab&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2018-06-08-summit-supercomputer-research-ai-oak-ridge.html\" data-rapid_p=\"3\" data-v9y=\"0\">Summit supercomputer<\/a>&nbsp;in Tennessee was previously number one on the list with 148.8 petaflops of computing power, making Fugaku 2.8 times more powerful than that system.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"o-article_block pb-15 pb-5@m- mt-n35 mt-n25@m mt-n15@s\">\n<div class=\"grid@tl+\">\n<div class=\"full-width@tp- grid@tl+__cell col-8-of-12@tl+\">\n<div class=\"article-text c-gray-1 no-review\">\n<p>Fujitsu licensed the designs for the processor from ARM, which is owned by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2016-07-18-softbank-buys-mobile-chip-designer-arm-for-32-billion.html\">Japanese carrier SoftBank<\/a>. The system cost more than $1 billion and took about six years to design and build.&nbsp;According to&nbsp;<a class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/22\/technology\/japanese-supercomputer-fugaku-tops-american-chinese-machines.html?smid=tw-nytimesbits&amp;smtyp=cur\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The New York Times<\/em><\/a>, researchers are already using Fugaku to help with coronavirus-related research.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In recent years, x86-based systems featuring processors made by Intel and AMD have been the most common sight on the Top500; only four ARM-based supercomputers appear on the current list. What&#8217;s also notable about Fugaku is that it doesn&#8217;t include any dedicated GPUs to help with artificial intelligence applications.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As these things usually go, Fugaku is unlikely to hold the number one spot for long.&nbsp;<a class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2019-05-07-supercomputer-ai-amd-cray-department-of-energy-frontier.html\">With help from AMD<\/a>, Cray Computing is building a 1.5 exaflop system for the Department of Energy and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Cray is also making an Intel-based exascale system for the&nbsp;<a class=\"_e75a791d-denali-editor-page-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2019\/03\/18\/intel-us-exascale-supercomputer-department-of-energy\/\">Argonne National Laboratory<\/a>. Both supercomputers are slated to debut sometime in 2021. Still, it&#8217;s a significant accomplishment for Japan in a space dominated by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2016-06-20-homegrown-china-supercomputer-is-worlds-fastest.html\">China<\/a>&nbsp;and the US.
