5G network continues its steady march to ubiquity\" href=\"https:\/\/www.phonearena.com\/news\/t-mobile-5g-network-availability-expanded-new-cities_id124829\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-id=\"124829\" data-type=\"article\">the rapidly expanding network<\/a>&nbsp;to its knees on Monday.<\/p>\n<div>Although CEO Mike Sievert was quick to blame&nbsp;<a class=\"previewtooltip\" title=\"Major U.S. carriers go down on Monday afternoon (UPDATE: Blame it on T-Mobile)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.phonearena.com\/news\/major-us-carriers-go-down_id125340\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-id=\"125340\" data-type=\"article\">the nationwide outage<\/a>&nbsp;on an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.t-mobile.com\/news\/update-for-customers-on-network-issues\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">innocent-sounding &#8220;IP traffic related issue&#8221;<\/a>&nbsp;creating &#8220;significant capacity issues in the network core throughout the day&#8221;, this somewhat vague and general explanation is seemingly not enough to satisfy FCC Chairman Ajit Pai.<\/div>\n<h2>T-Mobile will be under scrutiny&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<div>Without going into many details,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AjitPaiFCC\/status\/1272703591908888581\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Pai vowed on Twitter<\/a>&nbsp;on Monday evening to &#8220;launch an investigation&#8221;, calling the T-Mobile network outage &#8220;unacceptable&#8221; and essentially demanding more specific and complete answers in the name of both the Federal Communications Commission and &#8220;American consumers.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div>It&#8217;s not yet clear if the FCC expects anything in particular to come to light during this investigation or even exactly how said probe will be conducted and on what it might focus, but the timing of T-Mo&#8217;s widespread service disruption certainly suggests this was somehow connected with its Sprint integration efforts.<\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div>\n<div id=\"gallery-f86cd860-8446-448d-9a87-d8e1db59fa69\" class=\"full-width-element-xs s_media main-image-group full-width-element\">\n<div class=\"image-group col-xs-12\">\n<div class=\"image-item col-xs-12\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i-cdn.phonearena.com\/images\/articles\/361123-image\/T-Mobile-Sprint-together.jpg\" alt=\"T-Mobile might get in trouble with the FCC over huge network outage\" width=\"599\" height=\"399\" data-id=\"361123\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"clearfix\">These have been&nbsp;<a class=\"previewtooltip\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.phonearena.com\/news\/t-mobile-5g-network-improvement-sprint-mid-band-spectrum-deployment_id123521\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-id=\"123521\" data-type=\"article\" data-original-title=\"T-Mobile is wasting no time improving its 5G network with Sprint&#039;s mid-band spectrum\">going on for a while now<\/a>&nbsp;after the merger between the two carriers was&nbsp;<a class=\"previewtooltip\" title=\"T-Mobile-Sprint merger official; expect 5G speeds up to 15 times faster than 4G; Legere leaves early\" href=\"https:\/\/www.phonearena.com\/news\/t-mobile-will-greatly-improve-its-5g-network-now-that-it-owns-sprint_id123499\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-id=\"123499\" data-type=\"article\">finalized on April 1<\/a>, but if the gradual migration of around one million Sprint subscribers indeed led to the great blackout of June 15, the FCC is right to ask questions about what will happen next.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div>After all, there are many more customers that will need to be transferred in the coming months, which could further amplify the &#8220;significant capacity issues&#8221; cited by Sievert. &#8220;American consumers&#8221; definitely have a right to know if T-Mobile&#8217;s network can handle this extra pressure, although we can&#8217;t help but think back to all the accusations against the FCC and DOJ.<\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div>A number of state AGs and industry pundits repeatedly claimed the T-Mobile\/Sprint merger was&nbsp;<a class=\"previewtooltip\" title=\"T-Mobile and Sprint react to the states&#039; reaction to the DOJ&#039;s court filing last month\" href=\"https:\/\/www.phonearena.com\/news\/t-mobile-sprint-merger-lawsuit-filing-states-doj-arguments_id121530\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-id=\"121530\" data-type=\"article\">not sufficiently scrutinized<\/a>, and while it&#8217;s obviously never too late to hold the two companies accountable for their technical errors, it is certainly too late to block the mega deal.<\/div>\n<h2>No signs of DDoS attacks<\/h2>\n<div>Of course, there are various other things that could have gone wrong, potentially explaining the outage, but after&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JDaIey\/status\/1272643998432350208\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">rampant social media speculation on Monday<\/a>, the DDoS attack theory doesn&#8217;t seem to hold water.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div>This initially suggested&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.phonearena.com\/t-mobile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">T-Mobile<\/a>&nbsp;was far from the only victim of a massive international cyber-attack aiming to flood multiple carriers and social networks with traffic, but both Verizon and AT&amp;T adamantly rejected the rumors (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/business-leaders\/t-mobile-says-voice-and-data-issue-is-cause-of-data-service-problem\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">via Fox Business<\/a>), highlighting their wireless services operated normally on June 15, with no sign of widespread trouble whatsoever.<\/div>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div>\n<div id=\"gallery-6ce5886f-b5a1-4aad-b78d-0c890d9d415d\" class=\"full-width-element-xs s_media main-image-group full-width-element\">\n<div class=\"image-group col-xs-12\">\n<div class=\"image-item col-xs-12\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i-cdn.phonearena.com\/images\/articles\/361124-image\/DDoS-keyboard.jpg\" alt=\"T-Mobile might get in trouble with the FCC over huge network outage\" width=\"599\" height=\"399\" data-id=\"361124\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"clearfix\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>It&#8217;s also worth pointing out that no T-Mobile officials supported the DDoS (distributed denial-of-service) gossip in any way, with the &#8220;Un-carrier&#8217;s&#8221; Help-dedicated Twitter handle labeling the outage as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TMobileHelp\/status\/1272645683263094784\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">a &#8220;widespread routing issue&#8221; right off the bat<\/a>.
