The Commerce Department has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commerce.gov\/news\/press-releases\/2020\/06\/commerce-clears-way-us-companies-more-fully-engage-tech-standards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">instituted<\/a>&nbsp;a rule allowing American companies to participate in developing standards where Huawei is involved, such as 5G wireless, AI and self-driving cars. Not surprisingly, the move has its roots in pride and pragmatism. The US doesn&rsquo;t want to &ldquo;cede leadership in global innovation&rdquo; by sitting out important decisions on future technology, according to Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross.<\/p>\n<p><em>Reuters<\/em>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-china-huawei-tech-exclusive\/exclusive-u-s-to-allow-companies-to-work-with-huawei-on-5g-standards-sources-idUSKBN23M2DF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">noted<\/a>&nbsp;that the change had been drafted in May, but was waiting for approval.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"o-article_block pb-15 pb-5@m- mt-n35 mt-n25@m mt-n15@s\">\n<div class=\"grid@tl+\">\n<div class=\"full-width@tp- grid@tl+__cell col-8-of-12@tl+\">\n<div class=\"article-text c-gray-1 no-review\">\n<p>Officials stressed that companies were still banned from sharing technology with Huawei for commercial purposes &mdash; this was just to help with setting standards. Still, it&rsquo;s likely to be a relief for some. The decision to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2019-05-15-president-trump-national-emergency-for-telecom-networks.html\">blacklist Huawei<\/a>&nbsp;left the US tech industry wondering if it would be allowed to help shape crucial standards at all.
