The company&rsquo;s approach eschewed the &ldquo;one big sensor&rdquo; angle that was most prevalent in smartphones, replacing it with a cluster of multiple sensors the data of which would be combined to produce a final frame.<\/p>\n<p>In the case of the&nbsp;<a title=\"Nokia 9 PureView promises next-gen photos from 5 cameras\" href=\"https:\/\/www.slashgear.com\/nokia-9-pureview-android-smartphone-price-technology-camera-release-24567155\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nokia 9 PureView<\/a>, for example, Nokia and Light worked on a cluster of five separate camera sensors. The Android smartphone would simultaneously capture with its dual 12-megapixel color cameras and trio of 12-megapixel monochrome cameras, each tuned differently and using different lenses.<\/p>\n<p>That raw data would then be combined, software massaging it into an image that promised better dynamic range, more accurate colors, and greater detail. On the one hand, that could indeed be the case: some of the images the Nokia 9 PureView could take&nbsp;<a title=\"I can&rsquo;t stop taking cat photos with the Nokia 9 PureView\" href=\"https:\/\/www.slashgear.com\/nokia-9-pureview-camera-review-sample-photos-lots-of-cats-19570322\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">were notably improved<\/a>&nbsp;over what we&rsquo;ve come to expect from most smartphone cameras. Sony and Light planned to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.slashgear.com\/light-and-sony-reveal-multi-camera-smartphone-collaboration-21566768\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">develop camera sensors<\/a>&nbsp;that would combine image data from four or more sensors, the two announced in early 2019. Only days later, Light and Xiaomi said they&rsquo;d be&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.slashgear.com\/xiaomi-light-partnership-hints-at-multiple-camera-insanity-26567586\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">making multi-camera devices<\/a>&nbsp;together.<\/p>\n<p>Now, though, that looks much less likely. With all quiet from the Sony and Xiaomi partnerships, and Nokia&rsquo;s successor to its Android phone seemingly&nbsp;<a title=\"Nokia 9 PureView successor teased for 2020\" href=\"https:\/\/www.slashgear.com\/nokia-9-pureview-successor-teased-for-2020-03602080\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">looking to Zeiss alone<\/a>&nbsp;for its camera talents, Light&rsquo;s presence in the segment was conspicuous by its absence.
