Backlinko’s user behaviour research puts local pack clicks at 42%. Digital Applied’s 2026 compilation puts it at 42% as well.

So somewhere between two-fifths and just under half of all clicks on a local search go to three map listings that sit above the organic results entirely.

The presence data is even more one-sided. Google ranks a local pack in roughly 93% of local searches. Digital Applied’s figures agree: 93% of Google searches with local intent display a local pack.

Which means for the overwhelming majority of local queries, the first thing a searcher sees is not a website at all. It is a listing.

Within the pack itself, the curve is flatter than the organic one. The #1 local pack result receives about 17.6% of click-throughs, #2 about 15.4%, and #3 about 15.1%. That flatness matters strategically: unlike organic search, where position one takes several times what position five takes, being third in the pack is worth nearly as much as being first. The cliff is not between first and third. It is between third and fourth, because fourth is not shown.

What being in the pack is worth

SOCi’s analysis of 12.9 billion data points found that businesses appearing in the Google three-pack receive 126% more traffic and 93% more conversion-oriented actions (calls, website clicks, and direction requests) than businesses ranking in positions four to ten.

Trust follows the same pattern. About 68% of searchers trust local three-pack listings, against 27% for organic results below the pack and 10% for paid results. When people research local businesses, they trust Google most (66%), then Google Maps (45%), then the business’s own website (36%).

Read that last sequence carefully. The business’s own website, the thing most of the marketing budget goes into, is the least trusted of the three surfaces, and it is the only one most businesses actively manage.

The profile is the storefront

Google’s own documentation quantifies what a complete profile does. Digital Applied’s 2026 data puts average monthly views for an optimised profile at about 2,700, and notes that 56% of profiles are not optimised, missing photos, categories, or descriptions.

That last figure is the whole opportunity in one number. More than half the competitive field has not done the free thing.

Reviews are a ranking factor and a conversion factor simultaneously

87% of consumers read online reviews for local businesses. That is close to universal, and it means reviews are not a reputation issue that sits alongside your marketing. They are inside the conversion path for nearly every customer.

The most useful finding in this area is counter-intuitive. BrightLocal’s analysis of conversion by star rating found that while conversion rates peak around 4.9 stars, the largest growth in conversion came from businesses that improved from 3.5 stars to 3.7 stars over a year, a jump of nearly 120%.

Two tenths of a star. The reason is that 3.5 sits below a psychological threshold where a business reads as risky, and 3.7 sits above it. The marginal return on review work is highest for businesses that are currently mediocre, not for businesses that are already good.

Star ratings also affect attention within the pack itself: listings showing five stars capture around 69% of attention, four stars around 59%, and three stars around 44%.

What actually drives pack ranking

The local algorithm weighs relevance, distance and prominence, and the practical work divides cleanly.

Category selection. The primary category is among the strongest levers available and is frequently set wrong. A business categorised as “Restaurant” competes in a different set from one categorised as “Nepalese Restaurant.” Get the primary category as specific as the truth allows, then add secondary categories.

NAP consistency. Name, address and phone must appear in one identical canonical form across the website, the profile, and every directory that mentions the business. Google’s local algorithm relies on exactly this consistency to establish that scattered mentions refer to a single entity.

This is where markets without reliable postcode systems have a structural disadvantage. Where addresses are expressed as ward numbers, tole names and landmarks rather than standardised postcodes, the same business routinely writes its address three different ways across its website, its Facebook page and its Google profile. Each variation weakens the signal. Forcing one canonical format across every surface costs nothing but attention and is often the highest-value local work available.

Duplicate listings. Duplicates get created when a business is added by a customer, an aggregator, or a former employee. Two listings for one business suppress each other. Claiming everything and merging or removing duplicates frequently produces the fastest visible improvement of anything in local search.

Review velocity, not just volume. A steady flow of recent reviews outperforms a large historical block. Businesses with fewer than ten reviews or an average below 4.0 face a measurable conversion penalty.

Photos and posts. Signals of an actively maintained profile, and part of why 56% of profiles underperform.

Any competent provider of seo services nepal or local search work anywhere should be starting with those five items before touching the website, because the return per hour is higher and the results arrive faster.

The AI Overview complication

There is a live change worth planning around. Roughly 40% of local business queries now trigger Google’s AI Overviews, per BrightLocal-sourced analysis. Digital Applied puts the figure at 43% and estimates a 31% reduction in clicks reaching individual business websites from those results.

But the same data contains the mitigation: 67% of AI Overviews for local queries reference Google Business Profile data directly, and optimised profiles are seeing 2.4x more profile views from AI-generated local recommendations.

So AI Overviews are taking clicks away from local business websites while increasing the value of the profile. For a local business, that is close to a reason to invert the usual budget priority. The asset gaining leverage is the free one.

How to measure any of this

The reason local search gets under-invested is partly that most businesses cannot see it. Website analytics show sessions; they do not show the profile, and the profile is where the majority of local activity now happens.

Three things belong in a local business’s monthly report, and none of them come from Google Analytics.

Profile interactions, broken out. The Business Profile performance panel reports calls, direction requests, website clicks and messages separately. These are the actual conversion events for a local business, and they are frequently several times the volume of anything the website records. A verified profile averages around 200 interactions a month, and an optimised one considerably more.

The search terms surfacing your profile. The same panel lists the queries that showed your listing. This is free keyword research based on real searches from real nearby customers, and it routinely contains vocabulary that appears nowhere on your website and in no keyword tool. In markets where the major research tools under-report local volume, this is the only reliable source of what people actually type.

Position in the pack, checked from the right place. Pack rankings vary by the searcher’s physical location, sometimes street by street. Checking from your own office tells you almost nothing, because Google knows where you are and your own business is close. Either use a rank tracker with geo-grid capability, or at minimum check from a few points across the area you actually serve.

The measurement trap worth naming: if reporting stops at website sessions, the shift toward AI Overviews reads as decline. Clicks to the site fall while profile views rise. A business that cuts local investment on the basis of falling sessions is cutting the channel that is growing.

What to do this quarter

In order, and none of it requires a website change:

Claim and verify everything. Search your business name and your address separately. Merge or remove every duplicate.

Fix the primary category. Make it as specific as is honestly accurate.

Force one canonical NAP format across the website, the profile, and every directory. A habit. If you are under 4.0, this is your highest-return activity by a wide margin.

Then look at the website.

Businesses that want this run properly usually hire it out, and the useful filter when evaluating an SEO Agency in Pokhara or anywhere else is whether their first proposal is about the profile or about blog posts.
