The phenomenon of systems that function successfully without a single center has been studied in depth in economics and sociology.<\/p>\n
Nobel laureate in economics Elinor Ostrom showed, drawing on extensive empirical research, that effective, sustainable management of resources and communities doesn’t require state or hierarchical control. Polycentric systems have multiple independent decision-making centers operating within a shared set of rules. Trust here comes from local monitoring and peer-to-peer accountability, not fear of sanctions handed down from above.<\/p>\n
Francis Fukuyama defines trust as a community’s shared expectation of honest, consistent behavior from its members, rooted in common norms and values. The nature of social ties, though, differs sharply: hierarchies tend toward \u201cbonding\u201d social capital, closed off within individual departments. Horizontal networks rely more on the \u201cbridging\u201d capital that Mark Granovetter described \u2014 thanks to \u201cweak ties\u201d between autonomous participants, information and resources move faster, and trust scales across the entire ecosystem.<\/p>\n
Studying self-managed (\u201cteal\u201d) organizations, Frederic Laloux showed that the core assumption behind traditional hierarchies \u2014 \u201cpeople can’t be trusted without oversight\u201d \u2014 is giving way to a different one: people are capable of self-organizing, given a transparent context.<\/p>\n
