The net worth statement is the document wealthy families consult most. It is also, according to Michael Gold, the one least likely to reveal what\u2019s actually putting their wealth at risk.<\/p>\n

Gold, founder and CEO of Gold Family Wealth in Westport, Connecticut, has spent more than 25 years working with high-net-worth entrepreneurs and families. His practice is built on a distinction that most advisory relationships never make: the difference between what a family thinks it owns and what it actually controls when a crisis arrives. A balance sheet shows assets. Whether those assets are protected, properly structured, or attached to documents that still reflect the owner\u2019s current wishes is a separate question entirely.<\/p>\n

The stakes of that question are not theoretical. Research compiled by Vanilla<\/a> shows that 16% of individuals with a household net worth above $25 million still have no estate plan, will, or trust in place. That gap persists across the segment of the population least able to afford the consequences.<\/p>\n

Gold returns often to the story of Joe Robbie, founder and original owner of the Miami Dolphins. Robbie died in 1990 without adequate estate planning. His assets were largely illiquid: real estate and a professional football franchise. When the estate tax bill arrived, there was no cash to pay it. \u201cAfter four years of fighting, his family sold the team for, I think it was like 108 or 109 million dollars, 47 million went to the IRS and the rest of it was fought amongst the kids,\u201d Gold says. Historical records put the estate tax payment at approximately $43 million<\/a>. \u201cThat\u2019s why we don\u2019t hear about the Robbie Dynasty as we hear about the Rockefeller dynasty,\u201d Gold says. \u201cAll because somebody didn\u2019t take the time to plan in advance.\u201d The Miami Dolphins are now valued at $12.5 billion<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Complexity Multiplier<\/b><\/h2>\n

\u201cIt gets more and more complicated the wealthier you get,\u201d Gold says. \u201cYou have real estate in multiple areas, sometimes in multiple countries, multiple businesses, and it just becomes more and more complex.\u201d<\/p>\n

Multiple marriages, children from different relationships, properties held across jurisdictions, and operating businesses running alongside passive portfolios: every additional element creates a new layer of potential gaps. Gaps between what a document said at the time it was drafted and how a family has actually changed. The readiness question Gold asks every client cuts straight through the complexity: if you were forced to exit tomorrow, would your family be financially okay? Would your employees have continuity? Would your clients? Most wealthy families have never been asked that question in a single conversation, let alone answered it.<\/p>\n

Gold applies the same audit to himself. During a review of his own estate documents, he discovered a structural gap he hadn\u2019t realized was there. \u201cI review my stuff because it\u2019s what I do,\u201d he says, \u201cand I caught that.\u201d That a structural gap was found at all, in the estate of the advisor who runs this exact process for clients professionally, is the point.<\/p>\n

Diagnosis Before Prescription<\/b><\/h2>\n

The model Gold developed draws directly from his own experience as a surgical patient. He underwent three spinal surgeries and worked closely with neurosurgeons through each of them. Their approach became a template. \u201cNot at one point was the surgeon like, \u2018So what do you think about this or that?\u2019\u201d he says. \u201cBefore they did anything, they did a suite of tests, MRI\u2019s, CAT scans, X-rays and all that. And then they laid out all the options from conservative to aggressive.\u201d<\/p>\n

His Westport-based practice runs on that same sequence. Before any solution is proposed, the team builds a complete picture of the client\u2019s financial life: business structure, family dynamics, risk management, estate documents, cross-entity exposures, and everything in between. \u201cWe need to really understand all the things,\u201d Gold says. \u201cThen we could see what gaps exist.\u201d What shows up is almost always the same: insurance coverage that hasn\u2019t kept pace with asset growth, beneficiary designations that predate major life changes, business interests lacking buy-sell agreements, assets titled in ways that create unintended liability. None of it appears on a portfolio statement.<\/p>\n

The gap between accumulating wealth and protecting it is where most planning failures begin. Michael Gold calls it \u201clooking under every hood\u201d, and it is the work that most traditional advisory relationships never get around to. Portfolios are reviewed quarterly. The structural architecture of a financial life rarely is.<\/p>\n
