My name is Ontor, and I\u2019m a <\/span>Freelance Web Designer<\/span><\/a> based in Malaysia. Before web design became my career, it was simply something I was curious about. I didn\u2019t start with a master plan or bold promises. I started by following what genuinely interested me.<\/span><\/p>\n

And that interest began long before I ever wrote a line of code.<\/span><\/p>\n

From a young age, I was drawn to creative work. Drawing, sketching, and building things were part of my everyday life. I enjoyed experimenting even when the results weren\u2019t perfect.<\/span><\/p>\n

Back then, I didn\u2019t know terms like <\/span>design systems<\/span><\/i> or <\/span>user experience<\/span><\/i>. I only knew that creating things helped me focus and express ideas in a way that felt natural. Looking back now, those early habits shaped how I work today, with curiosity, patience, and a willingness to learn.<\/span><\/p>\n

Moving to Malaysia, A new chapter<\/b><\/h2>\n

In 2018, I moved to Malaysia for my studies. That decision became a major turning point in my life. Living in a new country challenged me personally and professionally, exposing me to new cultures, ideas, and a fast-growing digital environment.<\/span><\/p>\n

Malaysia gave me the space to rethink my future.<\/span><\/p>\n

Surrounded by an expanding tech ecosystem, web design stopped being just an interest; it became a serious pursuit. I knew this was something I wanted to build with discipline and long-term focus.<\/span><\/p>\n

Late Nights, Bugs, and Learning Web Development Through Challenges<\/b><\/h2>\n

My web design journey started mostly through <\/span>self-learning<\/b>. I spent countless nights working with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Often, nothing worked. One small mistake could break an entire layout.<\/span><\/p>\n

There were moments of frustration and self-doubt. But every small win by fixing a bug, completing a layout, seeing a site load properly, kept me moving forward. Over time, the logic behind web design began to make sense.<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2019, I attended WordCamp Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur, and it was an experience I truly enjoyed. It was my first WordPress event, and it gave me the chance to connect with the local WordPress community and learn more about what was happening in the region. After that experience, I knew I didn\u2019t want to miss another WordCamp.<\/span><\/p>\n

One of the most impactful experiences in my journey was attending <\/span>WordCamp Asia 2024 in Taipei<\/b>. Spending four days with contributors, developers, and leaders from around the world gave me a broader perspective on the future of the web.<\/span><\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t about trends; it was about collaboration, sustainability, and responsibility.<\/span><\/p>\n

When Real Client Work Changed My Perspective<\/b><\/h2>\n

Once I started working on real projects, web design became more than design; it became a responsibility.<\/span><\/p>\n

Every website represented someone\u2019s business, reputation, and future. I began noticing a pattern: many websites looked great on launch day, but slowly broke down over time. Plugins went outdated, security updates were ignored, and performance dropped.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not because people didn\u2019t care, but because they didn\u2019t realize how much ongoing care a website needs. That realization reshaped my role as a web designer.<\/span><\/p>\n
