Across those five states,\u00a0<strong data-end=\"1330\" data-start=\"1281\"><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><strong>64,476 fatal crashes led<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0to 69,944 deaths<\/strong> during the period. Average annual miles per driver dropped <strong data-end=\"1610\" data-start=\"1601\">10.8%<\/strong> (from <strong data-end=\"1627\" data-start=\"1617\">11,797<\/strong> to <strong data-end=\"1641\" data-start=\"1631\">10,523<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p data-end=\"2186\" data-start=\"1645\">Yet the retreat in traffic volume did not translate into safer outcomes. <strong data-end=\"1748\" data-start=\"1718\">Fatal crashes rose in 2020<\/strong> despite emptier roads, then <strong data-end=\"1795\" data-start=\"1777\">peaked in 2021<\/strong>, the deadliest year of the five. The analysis attributes the spike to pandemic-era behavioral shifts: <strong data-end=\"1951\" data-start=\"1898\">excessive speeding, impaired driving, distraction<\/strong>, and a documented dip in roadway enforcement. By <strong data-end=\"2009\" data-start=\"2001\">2023<\/strong>, total mileage had mostly recovered (<strong data-end=\"2064\" data-start=\"2047\">3.25 trillion<\/strong>), but average miles per driver remained <strong data-end=\"2113\" data-start=\"2105\">3.3%<\/strong> below 2019, evidence of enduring hybrid work and localized travel habits.<\/p>\n<p data-end=\"2426\" data-start=\"2188\">\u201c<strong data-end=\"2263\" data-start=\"2189\">Remote work emptied the highways, riskier behavior refilled the danger,<\/strong>\u201d said a spokesperson from Omega Law. \u201cThe data shows a lasting behavior shift that outlived lockdowns.
