SY:<\/b> How did you find out?<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i> YM:<\/b> I got a text.<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i> SY:<\/b> You were at work?<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i> YM:<\/b> Yeah. At first, I didn\u2019t believe it. When your parent lives a public life, rumors happen. I called his phone voicemail. Texted him. Called the studio. Nothing. Then more messages started coming in. And finally, my mom called.<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i> SY:<\/b> That\u2019s when it felt real?<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i> YM:<\/b> It wasn\u2019t denial. I just wanted to hear his voice. I had so much to say. He was always busy, always working. But to me, he was everything.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Kentaro Miura\u2019s death was a seismic blow. Revered in Japan and around the world, his signature art style and storytelling made <\/span>Berserk<\/span><\/i> a genre-defining masterpiece. Despite long hiatuses, it never lost its relevance.<\/span><\/p>\n

YM:<\/b> Cleaning out his estate was the worst day of my life. So many books, so many tools. We couldn\u2019t keep everything. Most of it was donated books to libraries and tools to young artists. We kept the personal things.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

SY:<\/b> This was before the decision to continue Berserk?<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i> YM:<\/b> Way before.<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i> SY:<\/b> Were you involved in the continuation?<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i> YM:<\/b> Not at all. Kouji Mori and the team made that decision. I made it clear I\u2019d stay out of it. As a family member, I can\u2019t really comment. I\u2019m just grateful his legacy didn\u2019t end with him. That\u2019s what he would\u2019ve wanted.<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i> SY:<\/b> Do you think he had a clear ending planned?<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i> YM:<\/b> Absolutely. But he was always evolving. He might\u2019ve surprised even himself.<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i> SY:<\/b> Were there sketches or notes that stood out?<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i> YM:<\/b> Yes, many. But some things were never meant to be seen. I\u2019ll leave it at that.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Eventually, the studio made its decision. Miura\u2019s longtime assistants, under Kouji Mori\u2019s direction, chose to continue <\/span>Berserk<\/span><\/i>. The move wasn\u2019t universally accepted, but it was born out of love, not profit.<\/span><\/p>\n

YM:<\/b> He had a plan. I knew that even as a kid. He lived for those characters. When they continued it, I felt relief.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

SY:<\/b> Is that when you started writing?<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i> YM:<\/b> No, that came later. At the time, we were still dealing with the estate. That was the hardest part.<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i> SY:<\/b> So when did it begin?<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i> YM:<\/b> About a year later. My therapist suggested I write everything down: the funeral, the studio, the memories. It helped. Just a little at first. Then more. Eventually, I started writing about him and about our life.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

SY:<\/b> Do you see his influence in your work?<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i> YM:<\/b> Definitely. I don\u2019t copy him, but he shaped how I view stories. That stays with you.<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i> SY:<\/b> If your books became an anime, who would you want to direct?<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i> YM:<\/b> It doesn\u2019t work like that. People are either available, or they\u2019re not. They care, or they don\u2019t. I\u2019m just happy where things are.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

But success hasn\u2019t come without struggle.<\/span><\/p>\n

Her debut novel, <\/span>The Beast of Akune<\/span><\/i>, was accused of plagiarism; anonymous critics claimed she had borrowed from her father\u2019s unpublished work.<\/span><\/p>\n

YM:<\/b> It was hard. I expected criticism, but not that. My editor told me to stay quiet and focus on the work. So I did.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Despite the noise, the <\/span>Kannazuki<\/span><\/i> series found its audience. Millions of copies sold. A manga adaptation is in progress.<\/span>
\n<\/span> For someone accused of riding coattails, Yuka has carved a distinctly different path.<\/span><\/p>\n

YM:<\/b> I think it\u2019s good. I\u2019m nervous. It\u2019s not my father\u2019s work, and I hope people understand that.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

SY:<\/b> The fourth novel, Streets of Fire, comes out this month. Have you read any fan reactions?<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i> YM:<\/b> None. I\u2019m my own worst critic. I see flaws no one else does.<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i> SY:<\/b> Do you think your father would have approved?<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i> YM:<\/b> No. And I\u2019m not going to explain that. Nothing I did was ever good enough for him. I don\u2019t think he liked his own work, either.<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i> SY:<\/b> What would he have said?<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i> YM:<\/b> That it needed to be changed. Always. But I realized later\u2014that was the medication talking. When he was on it, nothing interested him. Off it, he couldn\u2019t sit still.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u00a0The Hidden Struggle<\/b><\/h3>\n

SY:<\/b> Medication?<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i> YM:<\/b> Schizophrenia. From a young age. He never told anyone\u2014not friends, not colleagues. In Japan, mental illness carries a heavy stigma. He wanted to be known only as a creator. Nothing else.<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i> SY:<\/b> That must\u2019ve been difficult.<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i> YM:<\/b> As a kid, I didn\u2019t understand. I thought all dads were like that vacant one moment, intense the next. On meds, he was detached. Of them, he worked nonstop. Only later did I realize what was really going on.<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i> SY:<\/b> He never talked about it?<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i> YM:<\/b> Never. He feared it made him look weak. Or worse, that people would say his brilliance was just a symptom. So he buried it\u2014and let the work speak.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

SY:<\/b> Some people online say you\u2019re capitalizing on his death. What would you say to them?<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i> YM:<\/b> I\u2019d tell them to hug their parents. You never know what you have until it\u2019s gone.<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i> SY:<\/b> That\u2019s it?<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i> YM:<\/b> They\u2019re grieving too. Blame gives people something to hold onto. Some are angry I\u2019m not the villain they want me to be.<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i> SY:<\/b> But you make money from these books?<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span><\/i> YM:<\/b> Very little. But I\u2019ll be okay. That\u2019s not what matters.<\/span><\/i>
