The time it takes for the irradiated infrared light to return from the object is measured, and the distance is calculated from this time.<\/p>\n<p>While a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Digital_camera\">normal camera<\/a> can only provide two-dimensional information about an object, the image taken by a TOF camera contains depth information, which allows three-dimensional information to be obtained. The method of acquiring information using images, as with cameras, is called \u201c3D-TOF\u201d, while the method of simply knowing distances is called \u201c1D-TOF\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Uses of TOF cameras<\/h2>\n<p>There are different types of <a href=\"https:\/\/mrdvs.com\/\">TOF cameras<\/a> with different purposes but the main uses of TOF cameras are same. Here are common uses of cameras.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recognition of people and shapes<\/h3>\n<p>TOF cameras are used for person and pattern recognition. They can recognize patient movements in hospitals and help monitor them. They can also be installed in stores to track people\u2019s movements and count the number of people.<\/p>\n<p>TOF cameras are also used in car automation. TOF cameras can be used to detect pedestrians and prevent vehicles from hitting pedestrians.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Object detection and security monitoring<\/h3>\n<p>TOF cameras are used for object detection and security monitoring in factories and other production sites. They can detect object intrusion when mounted on industrial robots and transportation equipment.<\/p>\n<p>If TOF cameras are installed on balers, robots, and other hazards, they can also determine whether the approaching object is a transported object or a person. When used to observe agricultural crops, measuring size and shape can determine when crops are ready to be harvested.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Use in smartphones<\/h3>\n<p>Distance image sensors based on TOF technology are increasingly used in smartphones. They can accurately capture the player\u2019s physical movements and reflect them in games. They are also expected to be used in VR and AR.<\/p>\n<p>They also allow users to instantly measure and display an object\u2019s dimensions when buying or selling on an e-commerce site. In addition, TOF cameras are also used for facial recognition when connecting to a smartphone.<\/p>\n<p>The TOF camera identifies the shape of the face to enable the facial recognition function. Unlike ordinary cameras, a TOF camera can also prevent identity theft because it recognizes the owner\u2019s face as a simple, flat surface, even if a photograph of the owner\u2019s face is used.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Principle of TOF cameras<\/h2>\n<p>A TOF camera mainly consists of a lens, a detector that detects light, and a light source that synchronizes with it. The reference light emitted by the onboard light source is reflected by the object, and the time it takes for the light to reach the detector (time of flight) is measured.<\/p>\n<p>The speed of light is about 300,000 km\/s and is an invariable constant.
