This chemical compound, also called carborundum, contains silicon and carbon. A semiconductor, silicon carbide occurs naturally as the mineral moissanite.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of its incredibly hard profile, silicon carbide is used to manufacture things like grinding wheels, sandpapers, and cutting equipment. According to one source, silicon carbide has a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/articles\/mohs-hardness-scale.htm#:~:text=The%20Mohs%20Hardness%20Scale%20is,on%20the%20Mohs%20Hardness%20Scale.\"  rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mohs hardness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 9.5. That comes in at number two behind only the world\u2019s hardest diamond.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><b> Spider Silk<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2658765\/\"  rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spider silk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> might not be something you\u2019d expect to find on a list of the world\u2019s strongest materials. But it makes the cut. It\u2019s a silk or protein fiber that spiders spin. While spider silk serves as adhesive traps to capture prey, there are other interesting facts you should know. Spider silk possesses tensile strengths on par with steel. In fact, it has a higher tensile strength than many kinds of steel. According to the National Institutes of Health, some silks are almost as elastic as rubber from a weight-to-weight perspective.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><b> Graphene<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Graphene is a substance extracted from graphite. It\u2019s also composed of pure carbon. It\u2019s known as being a strong, light, and flexible material. Graphene can be used for a wide variety of things because of its positive thermal, mechanical, and electrical properties. While lighter than paper, graphene is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/newscenter.lbl.gov\/2016\/02\/08\/graphene-is-strong-but-is-it-tough\/#:~:text=Graphene%2C%20a%20material%20consisting%20of,extraordinary%20mechanical%20and%20electrical%20properties.\"  rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">200 times stronger than steel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That\u2019s one reason it\u2019s considered the strongest material known to man. Graphene has an extremely high melting point. Its strength is due to its big regular arrangement of carbon atoms. So, it tops the list if you want the strongest material.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><b> Vectran<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kuraray.us.com\/products\/fibers\/vectran\/\"  rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vectran<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a high-performance multifilament yarn made from liquid crystal polymer. It\u2019s probably a material you\u2019re not familiar with. In case you weren\u2019t aware, Vectran is, pound for pound, five times stronger than steel. And Vectran, which gets high marks for strength and rigidity, is 10% stronger than aluminum.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It holds up well to flex fatigue, is dimensionally stable, and is resistant to organic and chemical solvents.
