They can reduce a mask&#8217;s effectiveness by a third to a half.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image image-large pull-none hasCaption shortcode\"><span class=\"imageContainer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy \" src=\"https:\/\/cnet4.cbsistatic.com\/img\/o9e_02v10Gzg57GP9O3DNv3NFRM=\/0x178:1764x806\/2020\/04\/08\/2ae0df27-f4ef-40cb-a3ad-ad5ff2cb48ca\/efficiency-after-alcohol-or-soap.jpg\" alt=\"Face mask efficiency reduction from cleaning\" width=\"921\" height=\"328\" \/><\/span><figcaption>\n<p>Reductions in mask filtration efficiency when cleaned with alcohol or soapy water. These results were obtained with a three-fold surgical mask, but Dr. Tsai indicates similar reductions in FE would occur with an N95 molded facepiece mask.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"credit\">Dr. Peter Tsai<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>How to clean your N95 mask<\/h2>\n<p>There are three cleaning methods, which experts find credible and you can do easily at home.<\/p>\n<h3>Method 1: Rotation<\/h3>\n<p>Dr. Tsai&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/utrf.tennessee.edu\/information-faqs-performance-protection-sterilization-of-face-mask-materials\/#author_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\" data-s-object-id=\"article-body\">cites a study in the New England Journal of Medicine<\/a>&nbsp;that uses a round robin rotation of masks so that each one is rested for at least 72 hours before being worn again. Tsai has not experimentally verified this method himself, but it relies on the widely held belief that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2020\/03\/19\/coronavirus-survives-on-surfaces-how-to-protect-yourself\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\" data-s-object-id=\"article-body\">the coronavirus should not survive more than 72 hours<\/a>&nbsp;on an inhospitable host, like the surface of an N95 mask. The downside to this method is that you need four masks per wearer, and that&#8217;s assuming you use only a single mask each day. But if you just make a single trip for essentials any given day, the numbers work.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image image-large pull-none hasCaption shortcode\"><span class=\"imageContainer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy \" src=\"https:\/\/cnet4.cbsistatic.com\/img\/PdyjFv93KaOWwS9OOpmfK-5Y9h0=\/2020\/04\/07\/20ce60c6-1062-49b1-acb1-898361117a88\/vlcsnap-2020-04-07-13h38m55s813.png\" alt=\"Boiling and N95 mask\" width=\"944\" height=\"531\" \/><\/span><figcaption>\n<p>Boiling is one method of disinfecting an N95 faceshield mask.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"credit\">CNET<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Method 2: Steaming or boiling<\/h3>\n<p>Dr. Tsai says submerging an N95 in 125C\/260F degree steam or boiling water for 3 minutes will disinfect the mask without significantly reducing its filtration efficiency (FE). Don&#8217;t excessively stir the mask if you boil it, use only enough manipulation to keep it submerged. If your mask has paper outer and inner layers, neither the steam or boiling methods are advisable as they will disintegrate those paper layers that hold the filter medium between them.<\/p>\n<h3>Method 3: Baking<\/h3>\n<p>I hesitate to include this method because, while simple, it assumes you have a second, dedicated oven for this purpose. If not, you run the risk of contaminating your main food preparation oven. Researchers at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/research.msu.edu\/msu-extension-develops-decontamination-method-to-reuse-n95-masks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-component=\"externalLink\" data-s-object-id=\"article-body\">Michigan State University refined this method<\/a>&nbsp;using a laboratory oven, and Dr. Tsai concurs that heating a mask for 30 minutes at 70C (160F) is an effective decontamination method.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image image-large pull-none hasCaption shortcode\"><span class=\"imageContainer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy \" src=\"https:\/\/cnet4.cbsistatic.com\/img\/97VLceTKgeLDbT5OmoUnRk2rNew=\/2020\/04\/07\/3ec6ead4-acd0-4fcc-9660-f7c33defd992\/vlcsnap-2020-04-07-13h39m12s930.png\" alt=\"Baking an N95 respirator mask\" width=\"889\" height=\"500\" \/><\/span><figcaption>\n<p>The baking method of mask disinfection seems attractive until you realize that you should use a dedicated oven.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"credit\">CNET<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>The most important step<\/h2>\n<p>Don&#8217;t ruin your freshly decontaminated mask by handling it incorrectly.
