US transportation secretary\u00a0Pete Buttigieg<\/a>, who has been on paternity leave since mid-August with newborn twins, called right-wing attacks on his paternity leave \u201cstrange\u201d and from \u201ca side of the aisle that used to claim the mantle of being pro-family\u201d.<\/p>\n

Buttigieg \u2013 who is gay \u2013 was the subject of criticism from\u00a0Fox<\/a>\u00a0News host Tucker Carlson on Thursday, who belittled the secretary\u2019s paternity leave while making homophobic comments and criticizing the administration for supply chain woes.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn his case, I guess he just doesn\u2019t understand the concept of bottle-feeding let alone the concept of paternity leave,\u201d Buttigieg said about Carlson on MSNBC<\/a>. \u201cWhat we have right now is an administration that\u2019s actually pro-family,\u201d said Buttigieg, who adopted newborn twins with his husband Chasten.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m blessed to experience that as an employee, being able to have the flexibility to take care of our newborn children, which is, by the way, work, it\u2019s joyful work, it\u2019s wonderful to work, but it definitely works,\u201d Buttigieg added.<\/p>\n

The comments came after an attack by Carlson on his show. \u201cPete Buttigieg has been on leave from his job since August after adopting a child,\u201d Tucker Carlson\u00a0told his Fox News audience<\/a>\u00a0on Thursday. \u201cPaternity leave, they call it, trying to figure out how to breastfeed \u2013 no word on how that went.\u201d<\/p>\n

In fact, Fox News provides paternity leave, and Carlson\u2019s colleagues have previously praised the company\u2019s six weeks of paid leave on-air.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey give us six weeks as dads for paternity and I\u2019m taking that six weeks,\u201d Fox & Friends co-host Todd Piro\u00a0told his viewers<\/a>\u00a0in March, according to the left-leaning research center Media Matters for America. \u201cI can\u2019t wait to bond with my little one.\u201d<\/p>\n

Similarly, Fox host Jesse Watters said he was \u201cpro-paternity<\/a>\u201d after taking six weeks following the birth of his third child.<\/p>\n

A transportation spokesperson said Buttigieg has been \u201cramping up activities\u201d and is expected to \u201ccontinue to take some time over the coming weeks to support his husband and take care of his new children\u201d, according to\u00a0Politico<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Carlson is one of the most controversial figures in US media with a history of extremist and racist statements that have often angered advertisers but have won him a hardcore fanbase that makes his show consistently one of the most popular on cable news.<\/p>\n
