In another piece of research reported by the&nbsp;<em>WSJ<\/em>, Facebook found in 2016 that 64 percent of users joining extremist groups on the platform did so as a result of the company&rsquo;s recommendation algorithms.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"o-article_block pb-15 pb-5@m- mt-n35 mt-n25@m mt-n15@s\">\n<div class=\"grid@tl+\">\n<div class=\"full-width@tp- grid@tl+__cell col-8-of-12@tl+\">\n<div class=\"article-text c-gray-1 no-review\">\n<p>The following year Facebook launched &ldquo;Common Ground,&rdquo; a wide-ranging effort to make the social network less polarizing and &ldquo;increase empathy&rdquo; among users.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Yet the company ultimately decided not to act on many of the group&rsquo;s recommendations, fearing it could fuel claims the company was biased against conservative viewpoints. Other proposed changes were watered down, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook&rsquo;s policy chief,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2018-12-23-facebook-cancelled-political-discussion-feature.html\">Joel Kaplan<\/a>, was reportedly particularly concerned with whether changes to News Feed rankings could further anger conservatives who already believed the company was biased against them. The&nbsp;<em>WSJ<\/em>&nbsp;also reports that Zuckerberg&#8217;s interest in this work was only &ldquo;fleeting,&rdquo; noting that more recently he has become a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2019-10-17-facebook-mark-zuckerberg-freedom-of-expression.html\">more vocal<\/a>&nbsp;proponent of free speech and has pushed back on the idea that social media makes people more divided.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, a Facebook spokesperson said the company had &ldquo;learned a lot since 2016,&rdquo; and noted Facebook has funneled $2 million into outside research on polarization. &ldquo;We&rsquo;ve learned a lot since 2016 and are not the same company today,&rdquo; the spokesperson said. &ldquo;We&rsquo;ve built a robust integrity team, strengthened our policies and practices to limit harmful content, and used research to understand our platform&#8217;s impact on society so we continue to improve.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Facebook has long grappled with questions over how it should police speech and what type of content it should be amplifying. The company recently introduced the first members of its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/facebook-oversight-board-members-184214216.html\">content oversight board<\/a>, a group of outside experts that will help Facebook deal with its most controversial content decisions. The company has been&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2019-10-28-facebook-employees-letter-political-ad-policies.html\">criticized internally<\/a>&nbsp;for controversial policies that allow politicians to spread unchecked misinformation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But Zuckerberg has made it clear he doesn&rsquo;t care much about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/karissabe\/status\/1222664083180154880?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1222664083180154880&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fmashable.com%2Farticle%2Ffacebook-2019-earnings-zuckerberg-no-need-to-be-liked%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&ldquo;being liked,&rdquo;<\/a>&nbsp;especially when it comes to issues of free speech.
