Researchers and clinicians from the Veteran\u2019s Administration in Bronx, New York, collaborated to test their population with spinal cord injury for risk of major cardiac events, including heart attack, stroke, and cardiac death.<\/p>\n

\u201cSpinal cord injury patients have extremely sedentary lifestyles and, consequently, cardiac disease is highly prevalent,\u201d said William A. Bauman, M.D., Director of the Department of Veterans Affairs Rehabilitation Research & Development Service\u2019s National Center for the Medical Consequences of Spinal Cord Injury. \u201cWe were pleased to find that Prevencio\u2019s multiple protein HART CVE blood test proved to be a highly useful clinical tool demonstrating a relationship with coronary artery calcium scores and the Framingham scoring system to predict a cardiac event. This preliminary finding is important because our goal was to identify an accurate test for assessment of cardiac risk for patients with spinal cord injury which can be easily obtained and does not require exposure to radiation.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the general population, HART CVE had previously been reported to be more accurate (86% AUC accuracy) than standard-of-care stress tests (52% AUC accuracy) and coronary artery calcium scores (~60% AUC accuracy).<\/p>\n
