The ISOCELL GN1 is &ldquo;only&rdquo; a 50-megapixel sensor, but at a 1\/1.3-inch size, it has relatively large 1.2-micron pixels to help cameras perform better in low light. It also has dual pixel autofocus not unlike the system found on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2019-10-23-canon-m6-mark-ii-review.html\" data-rapid_p=\"3\" data-v9y=\"1\">Canon cameras<\/a>, offering &ldquo;DSLR-level auto-focus speeds&rdquo; even in dimly-lit situations, Samsung wrote.<\/p>\n<p>If you need even better low-light performance, the new sensor also uses Samsung&rsquo;s Tetracell tech that merges four pixels into one. That shrinks the effective resolution to 12.5-megapixels &mdash; still plenty for most photos &mdash; but multiplies the light-gathering power by four times. Combined with the dual pixel AF, the &ldquo;GN1 is able to focus on an object quickly even in extreme low-light environment to deliver both brighter and sharper results,&rdquo; Samsung wrote.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"o-article_block pb-15 pb-5@m- mt-n35 mt-n25@m mt-n15@s\">\n<div class=\"grid@tl+\">\n<div class=\"full-width@tp- grid@tl+__cell col-8-of-12@tl+\">\n<div class=\"article-text c-gray-1 no-review\">\n<p>Samsung already has a 108-megapixel sensor used on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/edit.publishing.oath.com\/cms\/entry\/5ec39a9ec5b654614bcf391b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Galaxy S20 Ultra<\/a>, and is busy working on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.samsung.com\/global\/editorial-rivalling-the-human-eye-how-samsung-is-opening-up-the-possibilities-for-image-sensor-technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">even higher resolution<\/a>&nbsp;cameras. A 50-megapixel sensor might not sound as impressive, but it&rsquo;s much more useful for typical shooting scenarios in bars, concerts and barbecues (remember those?). On top of that, Samsung had to deal with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2020-03-21-samsung-galaxy-s20-ultra-camera-fix-in-us.html\">complaints<\/a>&nbsp;around autofocus for its 108-megapixel sensor when the Galaxy S20 first launched.<\/p>\n<p>The new sensor will compete with Sony&rsquo;s IMX 689 model used in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/one-plus-8-pro-review-5g-120-hz-quad-camera-155534134.html\">OnePlus 8<\/a>, and could first appear first in a Vivo phone according to a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UniverseIce\/status\/1262571527389630465?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">leak<\/a>.
