After its launch in 2011, the streaming service grew more quickly than anticipated and in 2014, it was swept up by Amazon in a deal worth&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2014-08-25-twitch-confirms-amazon-purchase.html\">nearly $1 billion<\/a>. Throughout these growth spurts, the company has stumbled its way through controversies over its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamesindustry.biz\/articles\/2019-06-27-drdisrespect-returns-to-twitch-after-ban-over-e3-livestream\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ban<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kotaku.com.au\/2019\/01\/fortnite-streamer-returns-to-twitch-after-alleged-assault\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">decisions<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kotaku.com\/twitch-streamer-says-she-was-banned-for-suggestive-atti-1839040894\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">gender-specific<\/a>&nbsp;(and specifically&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/twitch-nudity-attire-guidelines-094919224.html\">female-nipple-focused<\/a>) clothing restrictions, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AnneMunition\/status\/1177443803466059776\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">safety policies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Twitch&rsquo;s reputation needs a spit-shine. The Safety Advisory Council is an attempt to do just that.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The creation of the Safety Advisory Council is just one way we are enhancing our approach to issues of trust and safety,&rdquo; the company wrote. &ldquo;We will continue to invest in tools, products, and policies that promote the safety and well-being of everyone on Twitch.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>With the creation of an internal review board, Twitch is following a blueprint laid out by other technology companies in recent years. Notably, Facebook shared plans for a content oversight board&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2018-11-16-facebooks-borderline-content-filtering.html\">in 2018<\/a>&nbsp;and just this month it shared the names of its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/facebook-oversight-board-members-184214216.html\">first 20 members<\/a>. The group will oversee moderation disputes on Facebook, Instagram and the company&rsquo;s related umbrella of products, and it has the power to overrule CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
