The third competition of the Fetisov Journalism Awards, established by Gleb Gennadievich Fetisov, has started recently through the submission of journalistic works from all over the world. The selection process will end on August 1. The goal of the project is to promote modern journalism as a unique profession that aims to make the world better. Journalists from all over the world have the right to participate in the creative contest, regardless of their citizenship, nationality and religion.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gleb Fetisov\u2019s Journalism Award: Is Pulitzer Left Behind?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Entrepreneur Gleb Fetisov has established an award for journalists for honest and deep investigations in the field of human rights, the environment and the fight for peace in 2019, in Switzerland.<\/span><\/p>\n

Short biography. Gleb Fetisov, entrepreneur, economist, public figure was born in 1966. Doctor of Economics, Corresponding Member of the RAS, Professor. Member of the Federation Council (2001-2009), chairman of the Council for the Study of Productive Forces (2011-2015), member of the Public Chamber of the third and fourth convocations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Fetisov Journalism Awards\u2019 record prize pool of 520,000 Swiss francs (which is almost double the fund of the famous Pulitzer Prize) is an obvious sign of the solidity of the founder\u2019s intentions. Undoubtedly, the foundation of such an award is one of the brightest moments in the biography of Gleb Gennadievich Fetisov. But the main question was how the organizers were going to ensure the independence and objectivity of the winners\u2019 selection process. Some skeptics suspected the \u201chand of Moscow\u201d or other political forces in the new initiative.<\/span><\/p>\n

But Fetisov stated categorically, neither he nor the people close to him intend to influence the results of the contest. \u201cThe Fetisov family will never interfere in the formation of the expert council, the jury and the selection of winners. We have a different mission \u2013 to provide funding for all organizational issues and to form a prize fund,\u201d \u2013 the founder of the Fetisov Journalism Awards told Forbes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Committed to independent journalism<\/span><\/h2>\n

The words of Gleb Fetisov illustrate the principle of organizing the work of the competition, which excludes bias and prejudice. The organizing committee of the Fetisov Journalism Awards provides the works of the nominees to the Expert Council, that selects the finalists, and the jury chooses the winners among them. Both bodies are independent from each other and from the founder. It is also important that the formation of the jury is not a closed procedure: representatives of international journalistic associations, who are widely represented in the award bodies, have the right to nominate their candidates.<\/span><\/p>\n

In an interview with Medienwoche, a member of the FJA jury, director of the International Press Institute Barbara Trionfi (Austria) noted that the jury of the award consists mostly of people who have a deep sense of what high-quality independent journalism is.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey either work in the field of mass media themselves, or are closely connected with the<\/span><\/p>\n

journalistic community. Thus we will immediately be able to uncover any attempts of external pressure (which, I hope, will not happen). I am sure that the composition of the jury is a guarantee of quality and independence, \u201d \u2013 Trionfi concluded.<\/span><\/p>\n

The results of the previous Fetisov Journalism Awards ceremonies have already confirmed the professionalism and objectivity of the evaluation of the competition works. The Argentinean Diego Cabot won the Investigative Journalism nomination for reporting on the corruption of former Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner. The best environmental work was a series of publications on lead-acid battery recycling companies that pollute water and soil in Nigeria by Nigerian Isaac Anyaogu and German Petra Sorge.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Egyptian Mohamed Abo-elgheit, who described how weapons ended up in the hands of Islamic terrorists, received the award for his \u201cOutstanding Contribution to Peace \u201d. The first prize was recognized for \u201cthe Contribution to Civil Rights\u201d by Katie May, author of publications on the problems of the Canadian judiciary.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cToday the Fourth Estate itself needs protection. Our award aims to help journalists do what politicians cannot do \u2013 to erase mistrust, hostility and prejudice. Telling the truth about the diverse, contradictory and fascinating world where we live, journalists find the moral strength to take the side of good,\u201d \u2013 Gleb Gennadievich Fetisov emphasizes.<\/span><\/p>\n

The International Journalism Award is not the first philanthropic initiative in Fetisov\u2019s biography. In 2017, he sponsored the Russian Booker, an independent literary award. Fetisoff Illusion successfully produces film products, and partners with the Golden Eagle Film Awards and the Moscow International Film Festival.<\/span><\/p>\n
