Now, researchers from Intel and the University of Pennsylvania are turning their attention to brain tumors. Using Intel&rsquo;s AI hardware and software, Penn Medicine will lead 29 international healthcare and research institutions in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.intel.com\/news\/intel-works-university-pennsylvania-using-privacy-preserving-ai-identify-brain-tumors\/#gs.5raxcr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">creating an AI model<\/a>&nbsp;trained on the largest brain tumor dataset ever &#8212; and will do so without sharing sensitive patient data.<\/p>\n<p>The project is based on a technique called&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2017-04-07-gboard-studies-your-behavior-without-sending-details-to-google.html\" data-rapid_p=\"5\" data-v9y=\"1\">federated learning<\/a>, which trains an algorithm across decentralized servers, so that hospitals can work together without actually sharing patient data. This will allow the institutions &#8212; from the US, Canada, the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland and India &#8212; to create a much larger data set than any one institution would be able to on its own.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"o-article_block pb-15 pb-5@m- mt-n35 mt-n25@m mt-n15@s\">\n<div class=\"grid@tl+\">\n<div class=\"full-width@tp- grid@tl+__cell col-8-of-12@tl+\">\n<div class=\"article-text c-gray-1 no-review\">\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims?image_uri=https%3A%2F%2Fmedia-mbst-pub-ue1.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fcreatr-uploaded-images%2F2020-05%2Fd33e14a0-9396-11ea-adf7-296c26b65ce3&amp;thumbnail=640%2C&amp;client=49kdj93ncb8s938hkdo&amp;signature=ad82c1ecf98aa7c4e00a327dd61434cb6f99cab5\" alt=\"Intel&#039;s Federated Learning Infographic\" data-ops=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;AI shows great promise for the early detection of brain tumors, but it will require more data than any single medical center holds to reach its full potential,&rdquo; Intel principal engineer Jason Martin said in a press release.<\/p>\n<p>It&rsquo;s unclear how long it might take to develop the model, but the project is being funded through a three-year, $1.2 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
