Defining the Metaverse

The metaverse is defined as a digital reality amalgamating social media, online gaming, augmented reality(AR), virtual reality(VR) Non fungible tokens(NFTs) and cryptocurrencies which allows users to interact with one another virtually. It overlays visuals, sound and other sensory input in real life settings to enhance the user’s experience(augmented). This basically means what is there in the fictional world can be experienced in reality as if it were happening in real time.

It is a fine line between virtual and reality environments wherein interactions will be more multidimensional. Users would be able to immerse themselves in such a way that the boundaries between digital and physical worlds may cease to exist.

Facebook  CEO Mark Zuckerberg introduced the concept just last year, changing Facebook’s name to the Metaverse. Inspired by a novel called Snow Crash written by Neal Stephenson in 1992, Zuckerberg said that in the metaverse, one would be able to do ordinary day to day things such as working, hanging out with friends and family, shopping and creating in unique methods. It is a futuristic ideology where one would even be able to teleport wherever they want using a hologram, so you can be present digitally if not physically.

There is no doubt that due to the pandemic and numerous lockdowns as well as people all over the world being quarantined, the Metaverse would be an ideal way of living without breaking any rules. Since work meetings, school classes and university lectures can all be attended digitally with the help of the Metaverse, stepping out would not be required, and people’s incomes and daily lives would not be affected either.

There are, however, concerns that this may lead to less physical contact in the long run, and people isolating themselves entirely. Technology can only bring us so close, so it should be used as an enhancement, not a replacement.
