It’s still not fully resolved
T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T customers are experiencing issues placing calls across the US, according to user reports on Downdetector and on social media, with reports spiking around 2:20 PM ET.
The issue appears to be entirely on T-Mobile’s end: While AT&T tells The Verge that its network is “operating normally” and Verizon says its network is “performing well,” T-Mobile confirmed that it’s working to fix “a voice and data issue that has been affecting customers around the country.”
Verizon also says it’s not to blame: “We’re aware that another carrier is having network issues. Calls to and from that carrier may receive an error message,” reads part of a statement from the company. It makes sense that what appears to be a multi-network outage could actually stem from a single carrier, since people reporting failed calls don’t always know which carrier their recipient is using.
As of nearly midnight ET, six hours after its previous update, T-Mobile is still busy resolving the issue. “We are recovering from this now but it may still take several more hours before customer calling and texting is fully recovered,” reads a new blog post from T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert.
As of 6PM ET, the company had already restored data services, but was still struggling to return phone calls to normal.
Teams continue to work as quickly as possible to fix the voice & messaging problems some are seeing.
Data services are now available & some calls are completing. Alternate services like WhatsApp, Signal, iMessage, Facetime etc. are available. Thanks for your patience. https://twitter.com/NevilleRay/status/1272624569707184128 …Neville
@NevilleRay Our engineers are working to resolve a voice and data issue that has been affecting customers around the country. We’re sorry for the inconvenience and hope to have this fixed shortly.
It’s still unclear what the issue might be, though T-Mobile is now saying that it’s an “IP traffic related issue that has created significant capacity issues in the network core throughout the day.”
Earlier in the day, multiple Verge staffers were unable to place calls on T-Mobile. It appeared that both Sprint, now a T-Mobile subsidiary, and US Cellular are also experiencing problems.
