By Att.Editors: The following item is from the Qatar News Agency (QNA)

NOUKCHOTT, Dec. 30, 2002 (IPS) - Some 72 Mauritanians, resident in areas under the control of the rebel forces in northern Ivory Coast, have been evacuated.

Mauritanian Minister of Communications and government official spokesman El-Cheikh Ould Ali said the Mauritanian citizens have been evacuated aboard a Mauritanian airlines plane upon directives of Mauritanian President Maawya Ould Sidi Ahmed al-Taya.

He explained that the Mauritanians arrived in their home city of Kifa, 600 kms to the east of the capital Nouakchott, adding that repatriation of Mauritanians wishing to return home has been secured.

Tens of thousand of Mauritanians are living and engaged in commercial activities in Ivory Coast. (END)
