Adorable monster-catching game Ooblets<\/strong><\/em><\/a> has released an update to allow players to release their superfluous creature pals back into the wild. Releasing onto Xbox One in Game Preview and the Epic Games Store in Early Access, Ooblets <\/em>is the first game from the developers at Glumberland. It combines the monster collecting of a game like Pokémon<\/a> <\/em>with the decor focus of Nintendo’s Animal Crossing <\/em>franchise<\/a>. It’s a logical match, and even though the game isn’t one hundred percent complete, plenty of gamers are already having a ball inviting creatures like Gumple, Kingwa, and Gloopylonglegs into their hearts.<\/p>\n

Since its release on July 15, Ooblets <\/em>has already inspired a huge fan community. The game’s official Twitter account is filled with tons of fan art, custom plushies, and stories about discovering all of the positive vibes Ooblets<\/em> offers. The official Discord server already has over 19,000 fans discovering hidden tips and tricks and streaming their gameplay out to the community. For a game that launched less than a month ago on only two platforms, this explosive growth is a good sign that Glumberland is onto something big with their genre combination.<\/p>\n

Earlier today on Twitter, Glumberland<\/a> announced and launched an update to their game that will allow players to send “excess<\/em>” creatures to the Wildlands. This is basically a measure to help players who overinvested in early ooblets and overcrowded their farm. In the replies to the tweet, tree folk species Lumpstump has been outed as the cause of a lot of trouble of this type, since they’re easy to acquire in the early game. As players continue to farm for hours and expand their bestiary, the game’s performance starts to buckle under the weight of all the creatures a player acquired. To avoid lag, players can now talk with an NPC named Outgrid to send the creatures into the woods and restore the game to its rightful frame rate.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, Glumberland thought about the implications of its solution and put in a rather neat message regarding the problems with pet abandonment in the real world. The in-game note was shared by thingliv<\/a>, which reminds players that Ooblets <\/em>is just a game and that they shouldn’t send their actual cats and dogs into the woods like they might with Derble and Chickadingding. Instead, it encourages pet owners to seek a shelter that can take in the animal in a safe way.<\/p>\n

With smart and socially conscious updates like this, it’s clear that Ooblets <\/em>is in this for the long haul. Riding a wave of Pokemon<\/em>-adjacent titles like Temtem<\/a> <\/em>and Nexomon<\/em>, Ooblets <\/em>is the only contender to feel wholly like a game made in 2020. It doesn’t rely on nostalgia for the genre’s days of yore, it imagines what a hip new audience would enjoy and presents it in a sickeningly cute fashion.
