Garmin Connect, the service that lets runners, swimmers, and athletes of all sorts obsessively track their performance measured by Garmin wearables, is now syncing data again, The Verge can confirm. All of our activity data collected since Wednesday is now visible in the Garmin app.

Dozens of relieved Garmin owners on Twitter are also reporting the first signs of life, seeing data collected from their wearables now appear in the Garmin Connect app on their phones.

Garmin’s app, however, is still reporting server maintenance and the Garmin status page says Garmin Connect access is “limited,” so Garmin users are not totally in the clear yet. Garmin said on Saturday that it had “no indication that this outage has affected your data, including activity, payment or other personal information.”

The outage was caused by a new strain of ransomware called WastedLocker, according to sources speaking to ZDNET, Bleeping Computer, and Techcrunch. WastedLocker, operated by the hacker group known as Evil Corp, encypts data but doesn’t exfiltrate it, allowing affected systems to be recovered from backups without having to pay a ransom.

We’ll update this article when Garmin responds to requests for a statement.

See Campaign: https://www.theverge.com/2020/7/27/21339910/garmin-back-online-recovery-ransomeware
Contact Information:
Thomas Ricker

Tags:
, Artificial Intelligence Newswire, Wire, United States, English

Contact Information:

Thomas Ricker

Garmin’s smartwatches are syncing again. | Photo by Vjeran Pavic / The Verge Garmin services appear to be coming online after having been down since late Wednesday from an apparent ransomware attack.
