Coronavirus has hit the world hard and there are many areas that have been affected in a big way. Due to the global pandemic, it has become necessary for the world to endure a lockdown for several months, though it does seem as though we are coming towards the end of that. It is interesting to look back on the pandemic and try to understand what it takes to make the best of this right now. <\/span><\/p>\n

Make sure you understand the different ways in which coronavirus has impacted on driving, and the changes we have seen on the roads as a result. Now, one of the questions to consider here is asking yourself, have DUIs gone down during coronavirus? It is interesting to note some of the ways in which things have changed in this regard, as well as the factors that could have contributed to this. <\/span><\/p>\n

Impaired Driving Arrests Have Dropped in Some Areas<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Studies have actually shown that there has been a significant drop in impaired driving arrests in certain areas. Indeed, specifically, Oregon, Washington, and parts of the Pacific Northwest have seen a dip in DUIs since the pandemic became a widespread thing. Indeed, Washington State Patrol revealed that there had been a drop of close to 50% across the state during March, April, and May of this year. The drop is significant, but it is believed that law enforcement have viewed it as being simply a short-term measure, and once lockdown restrictions are lifted they expect the numbers to climb once again.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alcohol Not Believed to be a Reason<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Despite what people might believe, and despite what logic might suggest, it does not appear that people drinking less has been a contributing factor. Sure, once the bars and pubs initially shut there was a drop, and we’ll look at this more closely later. But, there was a massive uptick in the amount of alcohol bought and consumed at home during this period, so that more than made up for these establishments being shut. It seems improbable that there were less people drink-driving during this time; in many ways there are likely to be far more. The issue here, it seems, has been the people actually being caught and reprimanded. <\/span><\/p>\n

Drop After Bars and Restaurants Close<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

In Oregon, it was reported that there was a definite drop once the bars and restaurants closed, which happened in March of this year. Due to the business closures, more people were staying at home, and less were traveling in their vehicles, which would have seen a definite reduction in those on the road in order to offend. However, now that the bars and restaurants are beginning to open again, and businesses are back up and running, it seems likely that we could well see a rise in the number of DUI cases<\/span><\/a> happening again once things return to some degree of normalcy once again. <\/span><\/p>\n

Some States Have Seen Increase in DUIs<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

And some states have actually seen an increase in DUIs, rather than a decrease. For example, in Pennsylvania, there has been an increase in DUIs despite stay at home directives from the government. There has been speculation as to why more people might be offending, despite the lockdown rules. One school of thought is that drink driving does not carry the stigma nowadays that it used to, and this is encouraging more people to offend, knowing that punishment will be minimal. 62% of the offenders<\/span><\/a> in this instance were believed to be those with a history of drink driving, and were clearly not deterred by the pandemic. In fact, it seems likely that the stress and worry of the situation is something that did little to calm people’s nerves and curb these kinds of tendencies, so perhaps it’s not all that surprising. <\/span><\/p>\n

Spike in Alcohol Sales<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

One of the factors that has played a role when we are accounting for the figures here is the fact that the lockdown period has seen a stark rise in alcohol sales, and this could well have contributed. People have bought more alcohol in a bid to compensate for the bars and restaurants not being open. So this has meant that people still have access to alcohol, and are still able to drink drive, even without going to the pub.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lack of Law Enforcement on Roads<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

One of the biggest factors that has led to a drop in arrests, but the idea that there are probably more people than ever actually drink driving, is that there have been less law enforcement officials on the roads. Even a person with SR22 car insurance<\/span><\/a> is likely to be emboldened by a lack of law enforcement on the roads, and it seems like people have taken advantage of this. However, the flip side of this is that it could be argued that because there are less cars on the road, it is easier for law enforcement to spot those who are under the influence. So it is something that works both ways. However, it is interesting to note the differences that this provides, as well as how this impacts the statistics. <\/span><\/p>\n

As you can see, the answer to this question is not as simple or straightforward as it might at first have appeared. There are a lot of things that you need to make sure you get right when it comes to understanding the way DUIs work, and what drivers are doing on the roads. It is clear that coronavirus has had a major impact on this, though perhaps not in the way a lot of people would think. One thing is for sure, the figures are likely to climb even more once restrictions are removed and things are back to normal. <\/span><\/p>\n
