{"id":15023,"date":"2020-05-24T15:30:00","date_gmt":"2020-05-24T15:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/icrowdnewswire.com\/?p=2566305"},"modified":"2020-05-24T15:30:00","modified_gmt":"2020-05-24T15:30:00","slug":"intel-comet-lake-lack-of-pcie-4-0-support-is-a-big-missed-opportunity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/ipsnews.net\/business\/2020\/05\/24\/intel-comet-lake-lack-of-pcie-4-0-support-is-a-big-missed-opportunity\/","title":{"rendered":"Intel Comet Lake lack of PCIe 4.0 support is a big missed opportunity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Opinion: Intel Comet Lake is in a rough spot without PCIe 4.0<\/p>\n<p>After almost a year and a half of waiting,&nbsp;<a class=\"hawk-link-parsed\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/intel-comet-lake-release-date-news-and-features\" data-component-tracked=\"1\" data-dimension73=\"1110576037210028400\">Intel Comet Lake-S<\/a>&nbsp;has finally arrived, bringing a 10-core processor to its mainstream lineup for the first time &ndash; one with pretty amazing clock speeds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Just on the performance front, it does everything it needs to &ndash; the&nbsp;<a class=\"hawk-link-parsed\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/reviews\/intel-core-i9-10900k\" data-component-tracked=\"1\" data-dimension73=\"9182238629577394000\">Intel Core i9-10900K<\/a>&nbsp;provides some pretty incredible single- and multi-threaded performance, even if it doesn&#8217;t quite topple over AMD&#8217;s current hold on the desktop CPU throne.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re not living in such a simple world anymore, however, where performance is all that matters. Even if we&#8217;re&nbsp;<em>only&nbsp;<\/em>talking about PC gaming, the exclusion of PCIe 4.0 doesn&#8217;t bode well for future performance of systems with Comet Lake processors, especially where&nbsp;<a class=\"hawk-link-parsed\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/computing-components\/graphics-cards\/best-graphics-cards-1291458\" data-component-tracked=\"1\" data-dimension73=\"2372342994944450600\">graphics cards<\/a>&nbsp;and storage are concerned.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure data-bordeaux-image-check=\"\"><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 id=\"pcie-4-0-is-the-future-sorry\">PCIe 4.0 is the future, sorry<\/h2>\n<aside class=\"hawk-widget\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\" data-widget-id=\"1230898217019040500\" data-result=\"missing\"><\/aside>\n<p>When I first heard that PCIe 4.0 was coming to the AMD X570 platform back at&nbsp;<a class=\"hawk-link-parsed\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/computex-2019\" data-component-tracked=\"1\" data-dimension73=\"1000637556359851600\">Computex 2019<\/a>, I knew that it would be an improvement over PCIe 3.0, I just didn&#8217;t realize&nbsp;<em>how much of an improvement<\/em>&nbsp;it would be.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve only had the chance to test one SSD that uses the interface, the Gigabyte Aorus NVMe Gen4 SSD that AMD provided in my testing kit when I reviewed the&nbsp;<a class=\"hawk-link-parsed\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/techradar.com\/reviews\/amd-ryzen-9-3900x\" data-component-tracked=\"1\" data-dimension73=\"1297061068278404900\">Ryzen 9 3900X<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a class=\"hawk-link-parsed\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/reviews\/amd-ryzen-7-3700x\" data-component-tracked=\"1\" data-dimension73=\"5724903671419278000\">Ryzen 7 3700X<\/a>. That SSD is currently locked up in an office building in Manhattan, but when I tested that processor, I was able to get speeds of 4,996 MB\/s in the CrystalDiskMark sequential read test. To put that in perspective, the Adata XPG SX8200 Pro I use on my test bench gets 3,720MB\/s in the same test &ndash; that&#8217;s a 25% improvement already, from one of the fastest PCIe 3.0 SSDs to one of the first PCIe 4.0 SSDs.<\/p>\n<p>The&nbsp;<a class=\"hawk-link-parsed\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/best-solid-state-drives-ssds\" data-component-tracked=\"1\" data-dimension73=\"1065496399238986400\">best SSDs<\/a>&nbsp;will get faster and faster on this interface as time goes on, making PCIe 3.0 SSDs obsolete in the same way that NVMe SSDs did to SATA SSDs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s even before you consider the other major component on PCIe &ndash; the best graphics cards. Sure, the only graphics cards that use PCIe 4.0 right now are&nbsp;<a class=\"hawk-link-parsed\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/amd-navi\" data-component-tracked=\"1\" data-dimension73=\"1327035577435453000\">AMD Navi<\/a>&nbsp;cards like the&nbsp;<a class=\"hawk-link-parsed\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/reviews\/amd-radeon-rx-5700-xt\" data-component-tracked=\"1\" data-dimension73=\"8397296581294766000\">Radeon RX 5700 XT<\/a>, but that&#8217;s going to change. We&#8217;ve already heard rumors that the&nbsp;<a class=\"hawk-link-parsed\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/nvidia-geforce-rtx-3000-graphics-cards-could-make-4k-graphics-the-norm-for-pc-gaming\" data-component-tracked=\"1\" data-dimension73=\"3929722963228024000\">RTX 3000 cards are going to use PCIe 4.0<\/a>, and if that&#8217;s not enough, Nvidia is already using PCIe 4.0 in its&nbsp;<a class=\"hawk-link-parsed\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/nvidia-chose-amd-for-its-most-powerful-product-yet-heres-why\" data-component-tracked=\"1\" data-dimension73=\"3845125801209307600\">server-grade Ampere products<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure data-bordeaux-image-check=\"\"><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 id=\"gaming-gaming-gaming\">Gaming gaming gaming<\/h2>\n<p>The&nbsp;<a class=\"hawk-link-parsed\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/ps5\" data-component-tracked=\"1\" data-dimension73=\"1227571968676484400\">PS5<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a class=\"hawk-link-parsed\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/xbox-series-x\" data-component-tracked=\"1\" data-dimension73=\"6453801461718957000\">Xbox Series X<\/a>&nbsp;are just a few months away at this point, and both Sony and Microsoft won&#8217;t stop talking about the SSDs in these systems and how they&#8217;re going to push gaming forward. Hell, remember that&nbsp;<a class=\"hawk-link-parsed\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/an-early-look-at-unreal-engine-5\" data-component-tracked=\"1\" data-dimension73=\"7838172599284030000\">Unreal Engine 5 tech demo<\/a>&nbsp;that looked incredible? The developers behind that are saying that if PC gamers want to be able to see stuff like that they&#8217;re going to&nbsp;<a class=\"hawk-link-parsed\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/youre-going-to-want-a-speedy-nvme-ssd-if-you-want-to-keep-up-with-the-ps5\" data-component-tracked=\"1\" data-dimension73=\"7977470865133551000\">have to pick up an NVMe SSD<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And, yeah, you can do that with a Comet Lake-S processor, that&#8217;s absolutely true. But if the consoles are all using PCIe 4.0 SSDs, it&#8217;s not going to be long before that&#8217;s the baseline of performance for AAA games &ndash; that&#8217;s kind of how it goes with each console launch.<\/p>\n<p>Intel likes to make claims that it makes the&nbsp;<a class=\"hawk-link-parsed\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/best-processors\" data-component-tracked=\"1\" data-dimension73=\"6673480830191218000\">best processors<\/a>&nbsp;for gaming, and what it bases those claims on is that single-core performance is the most important factor. And, for the most part, it&#8217;s right &ndash;&nbsp;<em>at launch<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Given how even in my briefing for these 10th-generation Comet Lake-S processors, Intel compared the Intel Core i9-10900K to the Core i7-7700K because people typically upgrade every 3-5 years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With a high-end product like the Core i9-10900K, there are going to be users that will upgrade as soon as Intel&#8217;s 11th-generation desktop chip comes out, sure, but there are going to be many&nbsp;<em>more<\/em>&nbsp;that will be relying on that processor for longer than just a year or two.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"intel-should-have-waited\">Intel should have waited<\/h2>\n<p>Back at&nbsp;<a class=\"hawk-link-parsed\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/ces-2020-day-3-all-the-latest-news-analysis-and-cool-new-gadgets\" data-component-tracked=\"1\" data-dimension73=\"4945404682591721000\">CES 2020<\/a>, when Intel teased&nbsp;<a class=\"hawk-link-parsed\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/intel-xe-graphics-cards\" data-component-tracked=\"1\" data-dimension73=\"3321623177757706000\">Xe graphics<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a class=\"hawk-link-parsed\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/intel-tiger-lake\" data-component-tracked=\"1\" data-dimension73=\"2142270867601824300\">Tiger Lake<\/a>, I said that Team Blue&nbsp;<a class=\"hawk-link-parsed\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/intel-needs-to-put-out-a-desktop-processor-if-it-doesnt-want-to-become-irrelevant\" data-component-tracked=\"1\" data-dimension73=\"4042081739151413000\">needed to launch a desktop processor<\/a>&nbsp;if it wanted to stay relevant. And it did that. However, nothing exists in a vacuum.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>By launching a new processor that not only is expensive enough on its own but also requires a whole new&nbsp;<a class=\"hawk-link-parsed\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techradar.com\/news\/computing-components\/motherboards\/best-motherboard-14-reviewed-and-rated-904229\" data-component-tracked=\"1\" data-dimension73=\"1199579077823394300\">motherboard<\/a>, Intel is essentially asking that consumers spend hundreds (if not more) on a system that&#8217;s going to be, in some ways, inferior to a console in less than a year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Because lightning-fast storage is shaping up to be one of the battling grounds of the upcoming generation of games &ndash; and you can be damn sure that will include the best PC games &ndash; Intel&#8217;s lack of PCIe 4.0 seems incredibly short-sighted, especially for a company that puts so much value in PC gaming.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Only time will tell if PCIe 4.0 becomes as big a deal as I think it will, but it&#8217;s not looking so hot for Intel.
