U.S. Attorney Joins Bristol Bay Industrial’s Executive Leadership

Anchorage, Alaska (August 30, 2021) – Stephen J. Cox joins Bristol Bay Industrial (BBI) as Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Chief Strategy Officer. Cox will be responsible for overseeing the company’s corporate legal and compliance functions and will work alongside executive management and with BBI’s member companies to develop corporate strategy–including business development opportunities, strategic communications and government relations.

“We are fortunate to have a proven leader of Stephen’s caliber join the team at Bristol Bay Industrial,” said President and Chief Executive Officer Mark D. Nelson. “Stephen brings depth of experience and a unique blend of leadership skills, legal talent, personal diplomacy and strategic planning to his new role. His integrity, judgment and acumen will be force multipliers at BBI, fueling our continued growth and delivering increased value for our investors and customers.”

Prior to joining BBI, Cox served as U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Texas, which encompasses 43 counties and over three million residents. As the chief federal law enforcement officer for the district, Cox led a staff of over 120 prosecutors, civil litigators and support personnel in six field offices, overseeing the prosecution of all federal crimes and the litigation of all civil matters in the district. Immediately prior to his appointment as U.S. Attorney, Cox served as Deputy Associate Attorney General within the Department of Justice, where he spearheaded numerous policy reforms relating to corporate enforcement and regulatory reform and oversaw a wide variety of civil and criminal litigation.

Before his service at the Justice Department, Cox had a diverse career in business, law and public policy. He spent several years as Corporate Counsel for Apache Corporation, handling corporate and commercial transactions for new ventures in Alaska and abroad; ethics, compliance and internal investigations; technology, intellectual property, cyber-security and data-privacy matters; corporate governance and shareholder relations; and environmental regulatory issues. He also worked as a senior associate at WilmerHale, where his practice included crisis management; anti-bribery, sanctions and export-controls enforcement; and Congressional investigations. Cox also served as a senior aide to the Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and as adjutant on the William H. Webster Commission that investigated the FBI’s handling of counterterrorism intelligence before and after the November 2009 shootings at Fort Hood, Texas.

Cox studied computer science at Texas A&M University and law at the University of Houston, where he graduated summa cum laude. He is married to the lovesome Cristina Cox, with whom he shares three children, Esther, Hulda and Lawrence Diego. Cox and his family reside in Anchorage, Alaska.
